GUNS OF GLORY – Strafing Run (2016)
“Strafing Run“, the second album by GUNS OF GLORY quartet from Finland, rocks with an old-school feel & vibe and it’s a pleasant rock n’ roll listening.
Strafing is the military practice of attacking ground targets from low-flying aircraft, hence the album title and the band’s imaginary, some kind of tribute to the WWII heroes.
Musically, Guns Of Glory are old-chool hard rock with a classic feel & vibe which bring to mind Krokus and why not Airbourne but with an ‘extra’ bluesy touch.
The album opens in fine fashion with the fast paced ‘Running From You’, a riff-driven rocker where we can hear Petri Puheloinen’s vodka soaked raspy vocals. But Guns Of Glory knows that melody and harmony make a song, so do guitar solos, which are abundant. I found tracks like to ‘Till We Die’ to invoke their best Motorhead-ish likenesses for example.
There’s a good barn busting party anthem in ‘Move Aside’, while ‘Avenger’ has a wicked bluesy guitar solo. These tracks are simple yet very effective out of the gates hard rock.
The band add that blues touch in the midtempo semi-ballad ‘Don’t You Know’ with an almost southern atmosphere to it, ‘Days in the Chain Gang’ show the band’s American influences, as well on ‘Bad Boy Reputation’ with a pinch of Guns N’ Roses in the verses.
Easy listening, old-school hard rock is all about “Strafing Run”, with Guns Of Glory’s no other pretension that to provide entertaining fifty minutes of simple, effective rock n’ roll.
Good stuff.
