BILLION DOLLAR BABIES – The Game (2017)
Swedes BILLION DOLLAR BABIES released a really interesting album last year, and now are releasing on physical CD the EP “The Game“, an appetizer while their are working on the next full length album.
“The Game” includes two previously unreleased tracks recording during the sessions of the previous album ‘Chemical God’, two newly recorded acoustic tracks, plus two tracks recorded live last year during their extensive touring.
The two songs that didn’t make it into last year’s album worth to be finally released; ‘The Game’ is an energetic number with sharp riffage, while ‘Murder My Heart’ is more groovy, atmospheric.
There’s two really good acoustic tracks, in fact ‘unplugged’ as both are full in instrumentation just not through electricity, featuring original percussion as well. It’s cool to hear ‘Why Don’t You Put Up a Fight (Unplugged)’ done this way, as pretty much contrasts with the hard rocking original version.
The live tracks are well captured, showcasing Billion Dollar Babies raw & loud.
Additionally, you have here a revamp on “Chemical God”, the previous album.
Billion Dollar Babies is one of the most interesting acts from the current Scandinavian scene as they mix a modern sound & style with nods to the seedy underbelly of the late Eighties and early Nineties hard rock scene.
On many songs, the band blend powerful (extremely clean) guitar riffs with background electronics and then put a catchy chorus over it, resulting quite original as a whole.
The genre needs more bands like Billion Dollar Babies, strongly influenced by the classic hard rock era but with a really modern, inventive, refreshing sound and arrangements.
