LIZZY BORDEN – Visual Lies [Digitally Remastered +4]
LIZZY BORDEN returned after 11 years of studio silence with a new album, and one of you asked for the band’s classic ’80s album “Visual Lies” in its remastered edition.
“Visual Lies”, easily, is my favorite Lizzy Borden album ever, and one of the finest second half of the ’80s US hard rock recordings.
It’s simple: for “Visual Lies” Lizzy Borden wrote some of the best songs of his career, he got genius Max Norman to produce, and on lead guitar there’s future David Lee Roth and Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Joe Holmes, one of the most awesome – and underrated – hard rock guitarists from the era.
Put aside your prejudices about the band’s glam / big hair image and theatrical pose. “Visual Lies” rocks. Greatly.
Every track on the album is loaded with memorable riffs, charming vocal melodies and catchy choruses. The guitars are expertly crafted: every hook, every melody, every lead, no wasted notes.
We still find some of the US melodic metal sounds of Lizzy’s origins, but it was 1987, and thanks to Norman’s expert hands, “Visual Lies” is polished, punchy clear.
Opener “Me Against the World” is a classic, deriving its energy from the constant, steady thump of its rhythm guitars and big anthemic chorus. “Shock” is another another midpaced track with the huge vocal hooks and delicate, memorable guitars.
“Outcast” starts with a melting riff, and slows for an emotional, acoustic verse. This verse alone has better vocals on it than many bands have on their entire records… and of course, another of those amazing chorus hooks ready for Rock radio.
“Den of Thieves” picks up speed at just the right time on the record, and the guitar work during the verse is simply stunning, with some kickass leads to boot.
Title track “Visual Lies” uses some gentle melodic picking lines to create an incredible atmosphere before the swollen, glorious vocal hooks that could easily have given Cinderella or Def Leppard a run for their money.
“Eyes of a Stranger” may not be the equal to Queensryche’s track of the same name, but it’s an excellent melodic midtempo fist pumper. “Lord of the Flies” once again picks up the pace for some more extremely memorable melodic metal.
Another fav of mine “Voyeur (I’m Watching You)” also has delightful licks but this based off more of a bluesy hard rock vibe, a true melodic hard rock tune. The album ends with the great “Visions” and its swinging hooks and rollicking percussion.
The bonus tracks are demos, ok stuff yet not essential. The star of this reissue is the main album remastered.
And here I should mention something: “Visual Lies” is easily one of the best produced album of 1987. And when you have such quality material, remasters make wonders.
“Visual Lies [Digitally Remastered +4]” sounds fabulous, even more punchy than the original and with a glossy, balanced output.
Musically, the album is really good from start to finish. Every note is at the perfect level and no element of the music dominates another. With a vocalist this graceful and talented, that’s not an easy feat. The guitar work deserves an award for both its restraint and the sheer amount of quality found in every track.
This album is a major achievement and it’s a crime the band doesn’t get the credit it deserves.
