KINGOFTHEHILL – Unreleased (1992 – 2005)
As requested, here’s KINGOFTHEHILL second album, taped 1992 but never released as the record company dropped the band soon after the product was mastered. After more than a decade, these recordings were finally put on CD under the title… ”Unreleased”.
And glad they did it, as the songs on ”Unreleased” are as good as the band’s self-titled debut, still retaining the funky-hard sound ala Extreme / Poison / Dan Reed Network plus a slightly edgy attack – by still melodic – akin Warrant.
KINGOFTHEHILL’s ”Unreleased” rocks hard, and despite its title it’s a finished product, professionally recorded, produced, mixed & mastered.
Production credits go to Howard Benson (who did their debut) & guru Keith Olsen, recording the tracks at the usual high-end ’80s studios. Anyone who’s a fan of KINGOFTHEHILL first CD will definitely love this. All the glorious funk-metal is still there – “What Kind Of Man”, “What U See” – but what we also find is a welcome branching out by the band as well.
“Just A Little Bit” is a fantastic uptempo rocking number, which could have fit nicely on Bon Jovi’s ‘Keep The Faith’ – definitely single material with true hit potential.
“Hands On U” is pure, straight-ahead glam with that sleazy smell, while the acoustically filled ballad “Tonite” isn’t in the ‘real’ power ballad mold but more classic rocker, in the style of Electric Angels. We’re even treated to a beautiful piano tune in “Lisa”, not strictly a ballad.
Everything into ”Unreleased” has that distinctive KINGOFTHEHILL sound and the songwriting is truly first rate for the genre, standing up to anything on the first album.
