1989 was without a doubt one of the greatest year for Melodic Hard Rock music. Hundreds of good bands in the genre arose, and some were lucky to find success with excellent album releases. Of course there were dozens that never make it big despite their musical quality resulted far superior than many ‘new stars’.
Add AMERICAN ANGEL to the latter, with their impressive self-titled debut album. As requested, here’s 1989’s “American Angel“, a CD screaming for a reissue, with original copies being sold for $230.
If you trip back to 1989, when a memorable guitar riff and a good hair mousse were necessities, you may remember American Angel, who debuted on MTV to heavy rotation, and struck a chord in the Headbanger’s Ball accompanying scene.
These New Jersey guys had it all: a great frontman recalling an early Sebastian Bach (especially the attitude), searing guitars amalgamating hot licks, sizzling riffs & razor-sharp hooks, explosive choruses, and big backing vocals over catchy choruses – all worked together to create an amazing sound and some killer songs.

AMERICAN ANGEL perfectly defines everything that made late ’80s melodic hard rock great – while still with a pinch of hair metal, the music on “American Angel” is mature, well thought Melodic Hard Rock, commercial yet consistent. Take as reference some Skid Row, Lion, Hurricane – yeap, that good.
AMERICAN ANGEL didn’t make it big for one simple reason > overcrowded scene. Quality was in abundance, from songwriting to performances. And “American Angel” it’s a vivid proof of it.
