BRAINSTORM – Plague Of Rats (2025)
German powerhouse BRAINSTORM is returning armed with their latest studio album, ”Plague Of Rats”, and their new label, Reigning Phoenix Music (RPM), riding by their side. Arriving on February 28, 2025, ”Plague Of Rats” revives the Indian themes first presented on Soul Temptation (2003).
Lyrically marks a return to BRAINSTORM’s roots and their fascination for Indian culture, but musically this a band with over 20+ years of experience since that 2006 CD, and it shows here: confident, extremely melodic yet powerful, with an impeccable production.
The charging riffs and anthemic vocals evoke powerful feelings of nostalgia for power metal’s good earlier years with an added melodic easy listening feeling similar to MASTERPLAN w/Jorn Lande, but the Indian elements propel the music forward into a modern context with gripping and original ideas. Regarding BRAINSTORM’s evolution, vocalist Andy B. Franck comments, “After so many years, it’s difficult to record an album and not find yourself repeating yourself. ”Plague Of Rats” is perhaps the album where we managed to learn from past mistakes and combine all our strengths. I think we are all very proud of this album and can’t wait to play the songs live.”
The first thing that struck me was the “Live-in-Studio” sound, which gives the record an electrifying, concert-like atmosphere. Each of the 11 tracks bursts with energy, making it feel as though you’re standing in front of the stage, surrounded by flames and a roaring crowd. Production is impressive indeed.
One of the standout tracks, “False Memories”, immediately grabs your attention with its fast-paced rhythm and sharp, fiery riffs. The song’s melodic structure is catchy, and the vocals are reminiscent of Masterplan’s Jorn Lande, adding a retro yet energetic punch. The track’s intensity is balanced by its intricate composition, showcasing BRAINSTORM’s ability to blend technical skill with raw emotion.
Similarly, “Masquerade Conspiracy” ignites the soundscape with a galloping rhythm – the riffs are relentless, and the vocals are commanding, with a dark, almost hypnotic quality that draws you in. It’s a track that demands repeat listens, as its addictive energy is hard to resist.
“From Hell” continues the album’s uptempo momentum blending elements of Gamma Ray’s signature sound with BRAINSTORM’s own unique style. The track surprises with its use of gritty / martial vocals, both in the lead and backing sections, adding a devilish edge to the music. This darker tone complements the album’s overarching themes, inviting listeners to challenge societal norms and question the masks people wear. The track’s dynamic structure keeps you engaged, making it a highlight of the record.
Meanwhile, “Beyond Enemy Lines” serves as the epic finale, delivering a perfect balance of speed, technicality, and emotion. The soaring vocal harmonies and insane guitar solos create a sense of grandeur, leaving you with the urge to sing along and raise your fists in solidarity.
For a first-time listener of BRAINSTORM’s ”Plague of Rats” is an impressive introduction. The album is a masterful blend of musical ideas, with subtle influences from other metal giants, yet it never loses its own identity. Each riff, harmony, and rhythm is executed with precision, creating a cohesive and powerful listening experience.
The album’s energy is both invigorating and cathartic, offering a much-needed escape from the chaos of everyday life. The album’s themes of resilience and empowerment resonate deeply, encouraging listeners to face challenges head-on.
With its infectious melodies and masterful execution, BRAINSTORM has created a record that not only lives up to its name but also stands as a testament to their enduring talent.
