Hailing from Detroit, USA, MADAM X released debut LP ‘We Reserve The Right’ in 1984. The album was produced by American rock legend Rick Derringer and featured soon-to-be Vixen drummer Roxy Petrucci and her guitar playing sister Maxine.
The band were not only loud musically but also visually. The music and lyrics were about sex, double meanings, more sex, drugs, sleeze, still more sex, and rock ‘n’ roll; all of the songs had a great crunch, driving guitar sound that should allow you to bang your head and pump your fists.
Bootleg label LoudWorks put on CD MADAM X’s early demo which landed the band a record deal with Jet Records. Pretty well recorded, the tapes on “We Reserve The Demos” feature most of the songs from their soon to be debut album but in demo form – rawer, heavier – and some with different titles, lyrics and arrangements
We also get 3 bonus live tracks captured at Harpo’s in Detroit, January of 1985. For anyone who thought their air punchin’ tracks like ‘High In High School’ and ‘Come One, Come All’ were great then this is a really fun listen, as these versions, without record label exigency, showcase the original MADAM X vision and wild spirit.
The good thing about these early versions is the band’s rawness, more ballsy than the tracks later released. Vocalist Bret Kaiser sounds a lot like Sebastian Bach, you gotta hear it. It’s not surprising that later a young Sebastian Bach was member of MADAM X in 1986 for a few months before joining Skid Row. Seems that was the type of singer the Petrucci sisters wanted for the band.
“We Reserve The Demos” sound quality is much better than the files circulating for years among the fans as ‘Madam X with Sebastian Bach demos’. That’s not true, the singer here is Bret Kaiser. But the similarity is impressive.
As said, there’s more nerve of titles like the killer ‘High In High School’, ‘Dirty Girls’, Cat’s Got Your Tongue’ or the properly titled ‘Heavy Metal’.
Some songs even have an ‘Americanized’ Judas Priest feel circa 1982-83. There’s some live tracks recorded in Detroit in 1985 while MADAM X were touring the album. These are merely testimonial as the sound quality is pretty poor but enough o taste how good this band was alive.
