Hailing from Lancaster, England, WYTCH HAZEL has been gaining ground around the new wave of metal scene with their distinctive sound and stage presence since 2011. Since then the quartet have continually underscored and bolstered a signature sound rooted in heroic days of yore, but finessed to an elegant apex by long-time producer Ed Turner.
That sonic alchemy coalesces all over their upcoming new effort ”V: Lamentations”, bubbling with even more febrile creativity than previous LP’s Prelude, II: Sojourn, III: Pentecost and IV: Sacrament.
The Wytch Hazel sound relies on the interplay of Colin Hendra’s pleasantly understated vocals and his and Alex Haslam’s period-perfect 70s guitar wizardry, which drifts just close enough to the earliest days of NWoBHM to absorb a small electric charge. The guitars are very warm and 70s-centric, full of old-timey appeal and memorable bits.
On ”V: Lamentations” the similarity to 80s British metal is more extenuated than before, but it’s still present, and though things never get sharp or edgy, they do still orbit the hard rock / metalverso with some big, arena-ready moments.
