BIOSCOPE (Steve Rothery of Marillion) – Gentō (2025)
BIOSCOPE is a new collaborative project from guitarist Steve Rothery, founding member of Marillion, and electronic visionary Thorsten Quaeschning, musical director of Tangerine Dream (and soundtrack guru). Their debut album ”Gentō” will be issued next August 22 via earMusic.
The album is named after the Japanese term for “magic lantern”, a still-image projection system. Each of the tracks takes its inspiration from man’s endearing fascination with the moving image, weaving together Rothery’s emotive, melodic guitar work with Quaeschning’s expansive soundscapes.
The resulting music is described by Rothery as “a mesmerising journey through light and darkness, memory and imagination”. Elbow’s drummer Alex Reeves contributes to all tracks.
If you are eager to listen to something refreshing, different and interesting, BIOSCOPE is a perfect match between Progressive Rock and Ambient / Electronic. The great thing of ”Gentō” is that never loses its ”human factor” – despite build around ambient soundscapes there’s a rock feeling all over, with Rothery providing some amazing guitar work and helped by Reeves’ human drumming.

Together, they bring decades of musical experience to a project that feels both intimate and expansive. Rothery’s guitar lines speak with emotional clarity, while Quaeschning’s detailed sound design shapes the music’s internal architecture.
Their collaboration is not just a fusion of styles, but a thoughtful dialogue between two established musical identities – a true “bioscope” in the sense of offering a view of life through music.
