MYSTERY is one the of the best melodic progressive bands from Canada, and one of the most criminally overlooked by the rock community in general. The group has been together for almost four decades releasing very good albums, many of them featured at 0dayrox.
“Unveil the Mystery 2007-2012″ is a compilation album by Mystery, featuring songs recorded between 2007 and 2012 during the singer Benoit David era (he was lead vocalist for YES too), showcasing material from albums like ‘One Among the Living’ and ‘The World Is A Game’, including top musicians such as great drummer Nick D’Virgilio, guitarist Daryl Stuermer (Genesis, Phil Collins), and wizard keyboardist Oliver Wakeman – keyboards.
Released some time ago, this ”Unveil the Mystery 2007-2012 (2025 Remaster)” reissue serves as an excellent overview for new listeners, highlighting Mystery’s melodic progressive rock style, with David’s vocals contrasting with the band’s earlier work with singer Gary Savoie. It’s prog, but catchy, at places pop-rock, others melodic rock infused.
There are times when David hits those high notes but by-and-large his voice here is very AORish. The lead guitar of Michel St-Pere is superb throughout with some beautiful melodies, especially on ‘Dear Someone’ – on which Nick D’Virgilio drums.

Highlights tend to be the most melodic songs like ‘Wolf’, not particularly complex Neo-Prog; just great hooks with some powerful guitar work and lush keyboards. The voice of Benoît David is fantastic, he manages to have some special moments here like on ‘One Among the Living’, he fits like glove here with the melodic nature of music.

On ‘As I Am’ quiet beginnings soon giving way to anthemic heavy riffy guitars, powerful drums, modern sounding keyboards and an instantly catchy melody. Though as already mentioned it’s more AOR than Prog but there’s enough going on here to keep it interesting.
On the more proggy side ‘Travel to the Night’ is another instantly catchy piece padded out with an excellent instrumental section, keyboards and guitar, all played by mainman Michel St-Pere incidentally taking equal footing. Powerful stuff.

Maybe to some of you Mystery is a totally unknown band, deserved to be heard.
”Unveil the Mystery 2007-2012 (2025 Remaster)” is another winner from Mystery sure to please any fan of the band, and there’s more than enough high quality material on offer to impress those who have decided to look in because of David’s association with YES, or simply enjoy their more elaborated side of AOR.
