Now here is a band that every Melodic Rock fan should know, but few actually do. CASANOVA was a band put together in the early ’90s by singer / guitarist Michael Voss of Mad Max fame (now in Wolfpakk) and drummer Michael Eurich (Warlock).
Their second album 1992’s “One Night Stand” has been remastered by Bad Reputation including a bonus disc of rarities / bonus tracks, all with a crisp sound quality.
Along with Fair Warning’s self-titled debut and Bonfire’s ‘Knock Out’, ”One Night Stand” is a brilliant example of the German melodic rock sound from the early ‘90s. Casanova took the basic American arena rock/AOR formula and added a distinctly European sense of polish and precision. They also took elements from the Hollywood hair metal scene, substituted spandex and sleaze for heart and emotion, and came up with a sound that is completely irresistible.
With One Night Stand in particular, you get a good indication of Casanova’s range, from fist-pumping anthems to grooving rockers to slower numbers. Since Divebomb’s 2010 reissue of One Night Stand (longtime out-of-print),fans expected a new edition.
Bad Reputation took the challenge to do better than the 2010’s reissue and offers 12 bonus tracks. The song “Here Comes That Feelin’ Again” was recorded during the One Night Stand sessions but never made it to the final album. The remaining bonus tracks are live, studio, demos, unreleased, and a song for a Tribute to KISS.
If Casanova didn’t become a household name on the ’90s hard rock scene, it wasn’t for lack of good songwriting and the will to succeed.
Casanova’s roots go back to classic and esteemed German hard rock/heavy metal bands such as MAD MAX and WARLOCK. Behind Casanova are familiar names such as singer and guitarist Michael Voss (ex-MAD MAX), who toured Europe with Bonfire, second guitarist Stephen Neumeier (former member of Mosh), drummer and Warlock founder Michael Eurich, who toured with Dio and Judas Priest, and bassist Jürgen Attig, who gained experience with Felix De Luxe and the Rainbirds.
Formed in 1990 when WARLOCK super-producer Henry Staroste brought together Michael Voss and Michael Eurich, CASANOVA’s debut album eventually sold 170,000 copies. Sticky Sweet is the first single from an album that was enthusiastically received by hard ‘n’ heavy experts such as Metal Hammer, who gave it a 6/7 rating, declaring CASANOVA, along with PINK CREAM 69, to be the only newcomers from Germany to be able to compete with other international bands.
From fist-pumping anthems like “Guns Say Fire” to grooving rockers like “The Doctor Is In”, to slower numbers like “One of These Days”, this album hat it all. As good as those songs are, it’s the ‘not too heavy, not too soft’ arena rock of “I’ll Come Runnin’,” “Home Is Where the Heart Is” and “Seal It With a Kiss” that show you Casanova’s real strength.
Those songs bring to mind the best singles from American bands like Giant, Firehouse and Nelson. That, of course, has a lot to do with Michael Voss, whose vocal performance here is nothing short of amazing.
If you’re a fan of the classic European melodic rock sound of bands like Bonfire, Jaded Heart, Treat and Fair Warning, or are a fan of Michael Voss’s work in Mad Max, you owe it to yourself to discover Casanova.
