Bad Reputation Records did it again: finally someone did a proper reissue / remaster on two of the most beloved Melodic Rock / AOR from the ’80s: DUKE JUPITER 1984’s ‘White Knuckle Ride‘, and 1985’s ‘The Line Of Your Fire‘. Both albums were reissued / bootlegged but never with a good sound quality until now.
There’s a regular 2-CD version, but Bad Reputation also offer this limited 3-CD set including the bonus disc ‘Captured Live!‘ featuring a 1984 show.
Simply put, DUKE JUPITER’s ‘White Knuckle Ride’ & ‘The Line Of Your Fire’ are among the best representation of the U.S. Mid-80s AOR / Melodic Rock sound rick in memorable hooks, catchy choruses and that insistent keyboard stabs!
Yes folks, both album are classics from the genre in the style of 1983’s Le ROUX, WHITE SISTER, 1985’s MICHAEL BOLTON, HYTS, ADRENALIN, etc, and on a few tracks still retaining their Southern / bluesy melodic roots. With songs co-written by Bob Halligan Jr, the man who transformed ICON on ‘Night Of The Crime’, you can’t go wrong!

DUKE JUPITER from Rochester, New York, was a very popular live band in the club scene of the late 70s and early 80s. They were active for 13 years (1973-1986) and the hit single “I’ll Drink To You” made it possible for them to tour with major bands like Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, Toto and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
On the early recordings the music style was more Southern Rock-like with Marshall James Styler’s husky voice, dual lead guitar playing and long instrumental passages. By the time for the release of Duke Jupiter “1”, they went for a slightly harder and more straightforward rocking approach while still keeping it radio-friendly and melodic.
This continued with the fifth album “You Make It Look Easy” from 1982 and it showed the band with a better production, improved songwriting and a more commercial sound.

In 1984 “White Knuckle Ride” was released and it really is a superb slice of keyboard-driven mid-80s AOR with a very nice mix of rockers and midpaced moments. Opening track “She’s So Hot”, second single “Rescue Me” and “Don’t Turn Your Back” are all well-written and carefully constructed songs with great choruses, swirling keyboards and tasty lead guitar playing by Greg Walker.
Then we have “Top Of The Bay”, which is a very melodic and keyboard-based song that breaks the pace nicely but with “Backfire” and “Little Lady” we are back in rocking territory again. The latter got some airplay on MTV / radio and it even got to #68 in the singles charts of that year.

By 1985 it was time for Duke Jupiter’s last album “The Line Of Your Fire” and it’s regarded by some as their finest moment, although it suffered from poor promotion and failed to make it commercially.
The music style is very much in the same vein as “White Knuckle Ride” but maybe even more refined with great, classic tracks like the atmospheric opener “Dancing On The Ice” and the radio-ready “(Come On Baby) We Might Fall In Love”. “You’re My Hero” is the obligatory power ballad in the style of Michael Bolton circa 1985, and the title track “The Line Of Your Fire” continues in familiar melodic rocking tradition.
Next up is “Since You’ve Been Gone”, which is a wonderful midtempo AOR song with a very catchy chorus. The last pair of tracks: “Never Say Goodbye” and “Sounds Like Love” are both appealing and on par with the others, catchy n’ melodious.

The bonus disc ‘Captured Live! recorded in 1984 is an unexpected gift. There isn’t too much Duke Jupiter live recordings from the era, so this is a treasure. This concert was self-released by the band a decade+ ago but really hard to find. You can hear the Duke Jupiter’s quality, and how more hard rocking they were live without the studio gloss.

‘White Knuckle Ride’ was Duke Jupiter’s first album on Morocco Records (Motown’s short-lived attempt to develop a rock and roll label) and that’s why this band didn’t enjoyed major success. Morocco Records never got off the ground. Specialits in R&B / Soul, Motown didn’t known how to promote rock bands like Duke Jupiter, and even if they tried, simply they didn’t have the contacts to promote a rock act. A shame.
