Press release states; “We’re just days away now from the ultimate last minute holidays present for all the metal fans in your life – and the yacht rock lovers as well… because you never know. They might wanna hear it, too”.
Yes, “YACHT METAL” is due to dock on December 19, and if you’ve missed the buzz that’s already about, then this is your chance to leap on board – the album features late ’70s / early ’80s FM soft rock songs – now popularly known as ‘Yacht Rock’ – re-imagined hard rock / metal.
And we have some awesome artists from the genre recording for the first time in many years: Joe Lynn Turner, Graham Bonnet, Lorraine Lewis (Femme Fatale), Derek Davis (Babylon A.D.), Britt Lightning (Vixen), Kim McAuliffe (Girlschool), Cherie Currie (The Runaways), Ronnie Romero, Mick Box (Uriah Heep), Doogie White, the full band Bullet Boys, Bob Daisley, Steve Morse, George Lynch, Phil Soussan, and many more!
All the recordings are previously unreleased, all taped 2025.
Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal was certainly excited at the prospect. “I knew that’s gonna be something fun,” he says. “And, sure enough, Yacht Metal! Had the pleasure of guesting alongside the mighty Graham Bonnet with music/produced by Derek Hughes – I hope you all enjoy! :)”
Lorraine Lewis (Femme Fatale) and George Lynch positively shred “Love Will Keep Us Together” (Captain & Tennille 1975 song), The BulletBoys batter “Taking It To The Streets” (Doobie Brothers), Joe Lynn Turner sails through “Ride Captain Ride” (Blues Image, 1970), while former Judas Priest frontman Tim “Ripper” Owens and UFO guitarist Vinnie Moore claim they want to “Kiss You All Over” (Exile Band, 1978). And maybe they do. You’ll have to listen to find out for sure!
Girlschool’s Kim McAuliffe and Leader Of Down savage Nicolette Larson’s version of Neil Young’s defenseless “Lotta Love” (1978), and Graham Bonnet & Bumblefoot pair up to give Grover Washington Jr. / Bill Withers’ 1980 smash “Just The Two Of Us” the kind of work-out that neither you nor they probably ever expected to hear.
Have you ever expected to hear “Thunder Island” (Jay Ferguson, 1977) sung by metal thunder Thor, joined by Steve Morse’s swirling guitar?
La Paz (and ex-Rainbow) frontman Doogie White hooks up with Manowar axeman Ross The Boss to find out what might happen if they fooled around with blues guitarist Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around And Fell In Love”, originally sung by future Jefferson Starship frontman Mickey Thomas. “Growing up, Elvin Bishop was one of my idols!” says Ross “It was an honor to play on ‘Fooled Around And Fell in Love!’“ Doogie’s vocal practically waving its arms in the air, while Ross bosses the melody with taut rock riffery and fiery buzz-hungry soloing. And the coda will anchor itself in your skull for days to come.
The mind-melting union of Louisville rockers Tantric and former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland flies out of the blocks with a no-holds-barred assault upon Starbuck’s 1976 hit “Moonlight Feels Right.” It’s crazy to hear the cheesy ”Escape – The Piña Colada Song” (Rupert Holmes, 1979) sung by Ronnie Romero like you never heard him before!
And we love America’s classic ”You Can Do Magic”, performed by Phil Soussan on bass, Mick Box on guitar, and Metal Church (!) Marc Lopes on lead vocals.
In a union as unexpected as a teapot on a Marshall stack, classic rock royalty and Sunset Strip legends have come together for a high-seas sonic adventure. On four strings, Bob Daisley—the thunderous bassist behind Ozzy Osbourne’s Blizzard of Ozz. On six strings, Mick Box, the eternal guitar maestro of Uriah Heep. At front and back, vocalist Marq Torien and drummer Fred Aching of the glam-leaning, groove-heavy BulletBoys. And powerless to resist their hard rock temptations, the Doobie Brothers’ anthem “Takin’ It to the Streets,” stripped naked and then re-imagined in full yacht metal regalia.
Produced in Los Angeles with a mix of analogue warmth and bite, this yacht metal version of “Takin’ It to the Streets” is more than a cover—it’s a seafaring reinvention, custom-built for late-night drives, dive-bar jukeboxes, and yes, possibly the top deck of a very dubious cruise liner.
So polish your deck shoes, crank up the stereo, and prepare to set sail on the smoothest, loudest voyage you didn’t know you needed.
