While recording the second Billy Satellite album in 1985 (never released until 2016) frontman Monty Byrom did some session musician work too, among these he provided backing vocals for Barbra Streisand on her album ‘Emotion’. The producer of that session was Don Felder (Eagles), who mentored Byrom, leading to other projects with major acts.
As a result, Byrom wrote songs that were recorded by Ace Frehley, David Lee Roth, Gregg Rolie, The Knack, George Thorogood, Van Halen, and many more. Then Byrom began writing songs for Eddie Money after the latter had a hit with a cover of “I Wanna Go Back” by Billy Satellite (co-written by Byrom).

Money’s version of “I Wanna Go Back” received the ASCAP/BMI Song of the Year Award, based on airplay. Then Byrom became member of Money’s band, and was the producer, engineer, and mixer on Money’s 1991 album ‘Right Here’. All over the years Monty Byrom continued active in the industry, even working on numerous movie and film soundtracks. A talented cat for sure.

Circa 2010, the idea to re-activate Billy Satellite arose, Monty joined again former band mates Ira Walker (bass) and Tom ‘Fee’ Falletti (drums) and began writing new songs. However, as the new music had a more classic rock bluesy feeling, they decided to rename Billy Satellite as ZEN ROAD PILOTS.
Their self-titled album ”Zen Road Pilots” was released 2012, and it’s a wonderful collection of songs with all Monty Byrom’s class and sense for melody we know of. Since opener ‘I Don’t Need Nobody’ – which sounds a lot like John Waite solo works – this is an engaging listen from start to finish.
