As requested, here’s the now rare Japanese SHM-CD pressing of GLENN FREY 1988’s album “Soul Searchin´“, using the 24-bit remaster produced in Japan – Soul Searchin´ has not been reissued in remastered form outside Asia. Packaged in a mini-LP replica format, the release includes an exclusive bonus track.
We all love the late GLENN FREY, guitarist and co-lead vocalist for the immortal Eagles, but the man has a fine solo career as well. “Soul Searchin´” is another fine, well crafted LP plenty of melodic songs and that ’80s sound, however Frey decided to put aside the synths for this album (only used when necessary) and concentrated in a more classic organic feeling.
The list of session musicianss is impressive, such as Michael Landau, Bruce Gaitsch and Paul Jackson Jr. on guitars, Neil Stubenhaus on bass, Robbie Buchanan on keyboards, John JR Robinson on drums, former Eagles bandmate Timothy B. Schmit on backing vocals, and many more top performers.
While the album’s title refers to his efforts to find his own identity, we can hear some Soul / Blues all over the record, alongside rockers and of course, Eagles-like ballads. Frey also plays quite a few of the instruments himself. And songwriting is very good.
Among the favorites here is the organ-led uptempo hit “True Love” (#13 on Billboard’s Hot 100), the rhythmically excited “Livin Right”, “Can’t Put Out This Fire”, and the more (for its time) contemporary funky of “Two Hearts”. This isn’t a guitar oriented rock album, however if you listen closely you can hear the subltle, excellent arrangements and guitar playing by Frey himself and the L.A. Session musicians participation.
If you enjoy well written tunes, plenty of soul and that ‘classic rock’ feeling, mostly on the uptempo side, this might just be for you. “Soul Searchin´” is that kind of albums that the more you listen, the more you like it.
This remastered SHM-CD release is very hard to find (thanks to Dozaemon)
