PERFECT BEASTS, a Supergroup of musical beasts team up for highly anticipated album, their self-titled “Perfect Beasts“. With John Mitchell on vocals and guitars, Darren Redick on bass, Nick Andrew playing guitars and guitar synths and Steve Hales on drums, their musical pedigree is vast.
John Mitchell needs no introduction; an accomplished guitarist, singer and producer, having been a member of the bands It Bites, Arena, Frost*, Kino, The Urbane, and Asia, as well as the mastermind behind Lonely Robot. He has produced albums for the likes of Alterbridge, Funeral For A Friend and more.
Steve is a versatile drummer, keyboard player and lyricist. Hailing from the Southampton megalopolis, he is a well-known member of the music scene, often performing with Kepler Ten and R2 – A Tribute to Rush. Nick has established a formidable reputation as a virtuoso guitarist, midi guitar pioneer and composer. He has supported artists as diverse as Midge Ure, John Williams (classical guitarist), Guthrie Govan and Napalm Death.
Darren is probably best known for his association with the UK’s national classic rock radio station, Planet Rock, rather than for his bass playing. However, he has been playing with bands around the Southern Counties since 2015, including Asylum Affair and The Lee Aaron Band. He has also performed with two Rush tributes.
John Mitchell is in his early fifties now, and you’d think he’d be starting to slow down a bit with all the various projects that he’s been involved with over the years, but this doesn’t seem to be the case at all, as here’s yet another one. And a very good one.
“Perfect Beasts” is Crossover Prog, melodic, dynamic, with many Rock&pop flourishes and Mitchell’s clean vocals – all song-format and very entertaining. Needless to mention: musicianship is excellent. Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott said; ”This album deserves to be heard!”

”Perfect Beasts” is an album that refuses to play by the rules. Its songs are adventurous yet accessible, driven by emotive, primal vocals and guitar sounds unlike anything heard before — thanks in part to the use of cutting-edge synth guitar and modern music technology.
“Every track tells a story, every riff has claws and every melody cuts deep,” says guitarist Nick Andrew. From the blistering riffs of the single ‘Three’s A Crowd’ to moments of the heavy philosophical title track ‘Perfect Beasts’, this album captures the power of rock while opening the door to unexpected influences — a sonic adventure where anything is possible.

The strong bass line gives the Perfect Beasts’ music an distinctive prog sound, dipping into funk and fusion. In ‘Undertow’, the bass party develops pretty much a tune in its own right, parallel to the main one, which gives the track a delicious depth. The bass line is particularly prominent in tracks like ‘Bad Things Happen’ and ‘Non-Stop To The Moon’ (making this a perfect song to have been released as the second single, in conjunction with the catchy chorus), while in ‘On A Curve’ it absolutely takes over.

Having said that, it’s not to dismiss the guitar work, which is also on par. In some of the tracks, you can hear classic hard rock riffs (‘Bad Things Happen’ and ‘Three’s A Crowd’), while in others the guitar solos borderline with fusion (‘Undertow’ and ‘On A Curve’), making this album a beautiful mixture of styles to enjoy.
The vocals delivered by John Mitchell are clear, with a subtle Asia vibe. In some tracks, you may catch some further vocal resemblances, perhaps YES in ‘Undertow’, but, generally, John has a distinctive voice that fits well into the overall scheme.

When a band says their music is not progressive, but totally is: here is one way of introducing PERFECT BEASTS to you. And we call a band ‘progressive’ when its music is adventurous, with clever arrangements, innovative, and not necessarily in terms of sound. This is the case with PERFECT BEASTS: they sound agile, accessible, entertainig, but there’s a busy background to enjoy too.
