”Red 13” is the only EP ever released by JOURNEY, the first on the band’s own label, Journey Music, and originally sold only via the band’s website, the online edition featured cover art by Kelly McDonald. When the album was packaged for retail sale, a new cover designed by artist and Journey fan Christopher Payne was chosen. This now rare Japanese edition features the original cover art.
Recorded a year after JOURNEY 2001’s album ‘Arrival’, the EP was created by the band as a ‘thank you’ to their fans for standing by Journey. The songs range from a slight return to their progressive roots, a bluesy hard rocker, a cinematic ballad with a dark side, and a great tune delivering their trademark melodic rock sound.
The ballad – which isn’t syruped – “Walkin’ Away from the Edge” was co-written with then-Queensrÿche frontman Geoff Tate, originally recorded by the band during the ‘Arrival’ sessions, but ultimately not used. Why not it’s a mystery, as it’s one of the best JOURNEY songs from 2000’s.
