KEVIN STEELE (Roxx Gang) – One Thing Left To Do (2026) HQ *Exclusive*

ROXX GANG were easily the most underrated, misunderstood band of the late ’80s and ’90s. If ever there was a band that should have attained superstardom it was Roxx Gang, Virgin Records’ first American hard rock signing. Unfairly lumped in with the whole hair band scene, Roxx Gang truly had the makings to become one of America ‘s greatest rock n’ roll bands. And for one glorious moment… they were.
KEVIN STEELE, the legendary lead singer and frontman of Roxx Gang (and later The Mojo Gurus), is finally releasing his first solo record, ”One Thing Left To Do”. The album and showcases Kevin’s masterful songwriting across all the musical styles that have shaped his colorful career, including glam, punk, rock, blues, and even southern rock.
With ‘One Thing Left To Do’, Steele brings his musical journey full circle with a truly remarkable record that you just have to hear.
Kevin Steele states in his press release that this is the album he always wanted to make and the fact that it is a labour of love is apparent throughout this overall fine release. From the songs, structure and performances, you would have to say that it is something that he will justifiably be proud of.
We certainly hope there will be another album but if it is indeed his ‘One Thing Left To Do’, then it has been well worth the wait.
The title track opens the set in rousing style with its swift, rollicking boogie stomp. “Snake Charmer” is a hypnotic and very seductive dose of sleazy that was, quite rightly in my opinion, released as a single and is already a highlight on here.
“The Bedspring Boogie” does exactly what it says on the tin, a song that easily could have been used in the early Roxx Gang days. Love the piano here, and the swagger of the song. “I Know What Yer Up To” follows, a bluesy track that makes pay attention.
Next, the achingly haunting ballad “Sad Sad Song” immediately becomes a firm favourite. Musically, we are reminded of the Dogs D’amour and Nikki Sudden here, which is always a good thing. There is a genuine vulnerability in the vocals, and it ends the first half of the album on a positive note.
One of our favourite Roxx Gang songs was ‘Nine Lives’ from their debut album, and ‘side two’ kicks off with its sequel of sorts in ‘The 9 Lives Blues.’ A bluesy rock beat with some killer piano that incorporates some of the vocal melody from 38 years ago creates a great song. Every instrument feels present in the mix, and the album’s momentum continues building.
“Fingers Crossed” is another highlight – a tongue in cheek, country tale that suits Mr. Steele’s voice so perfectly, as well as the extra bonus of some high quality pedal steel guitar work from Rob Pastore. Musically, this would be at home on albums by Izzy Stradlin, the Black Crowes, Quireboys, Stones. Steele’s drawl on the vocals shows another side to his voice, while also always sounding like himself.
A rocking soulful rhythm and blues groove, strengthened with horns, highlights ‘Nobody Tells Me When to Quit.’ I like the use of the backing vocals here, and adds some fun to the album.
Hard rock ‘n’ roll explodes out of the speaker through ‘My Baby Didn’t Come Home Last Night.’ It builds on the joyous spirit from the past couple of songs, and this is another one where I love the piano.
Proper album closer ‘There’s a Better Day Comin’ utilises a midtempo beat. This is one of those everyone raise your glass for a toast songs.
‘Don’t You Worry About Me’ appears to be a bonus track, as I don’t see it listed on the vinyl version of the album. It is not a cover of the Wildhearts song, if anyone had that thought. This is an acoustic troubadour celebration with some excellent guitar picking. And it’s very good.
Classic Rock n’ Roll from a guy who knows what this is all about, after hearing “One Thing Left To Do” you’re more than satisfied – in a time when artificial music dominates the globe, KEVIN STEELE is more human than ever.
