ROBIN BECK – Trouble Or Nothin’ (original 1989 release) *HQ*

320_1 /// 320_2 /// HQ 1 /// HQ 2
We can’t believe we didn’t featured this great Eighties album here; as requested, ROBIN BECK 1989’s ”Trouble Or Nothin´”, her fantastic record produced by melodic rock guru Desmond Child and recorded / mixed by legend Sir Arthur Payson.
Unbelievable, but ”Trouble Or Nothin´” is out of print / isn’t available since the Nineties as Universal Music Group refused to reissue, give license, or give Beck the master recording of the original. In the digital era, ”Trouble Or Nothin´” is not available digitally either. Ridiculous.
That’s why Robin Beck re-recorded the songs and released independently in 2009 her own version, and while a very good one, the magic of this original 1988/89 recording is unique.
All song sare pure ’80s gold, written by Holly Knight, Paul Stanley, Alice Cooper, Diane Warren, Tom Kelly & Billy Steinberg , Desmond Child himself… and Beck’s superb voice does the rest. Having Steve Lukather playing guitar on most songs doesn’t hurt either.
A song by song? No need, all are great.
Just to mention, ‘Hide Your Heart’ the KISS song first released by Bonnie Tyler, along with ‘Save Up All Your Tears’ for her 1988 album ‘Hide Your Heart’. Tyler also recorded ‘If You Were A Woman (And I Was A Man)’ in 1986 for ‘Secret Dreams And Forbidden Fire’.
‘Don’t Lose Any Sleep’ was first released by John Waite on his solo LP ‘Rover’s Return’ in 1987, and ‘In A Crazy World Like This’ is a Pat Benatar cover from the 1984 album ‘Tropico’.
Beck makes all these cuts very own, awesomely performed.
Of course the album has the hit ‘First Time’ used by Coca-Cola in a commercial around 1987-1988, and it became a big international blockbuster. It’s got a unique, less obvious transition from the verse to the chorus then you’d hear in most other rock&pop songs.
And I always had a soft spot for deep cut ‘Sleeping with the Enemy’… I can’t think of too many 80s AOR anthems that rival this absolute beast! What a killer melodic rock song, and an instant favorite. Awesome hooks all the way through, insane guitar work by Lukather, and great vocals by Beck.
It’s absurd this album does not get a CD / vinyl reissue, or make it available as digital download. Original CD copies are sold for over $200.
A MUST HAVE in your collection.
