THE DEAR HUNTER – Sunya (2026) *HQ*

320_1 /// 320_2 /// HQ 1 /// HQ 2
”Sunya” is the highly anticipated 2026 studio album from progressive rock visionaries THE DEAR HUNTER, continuing the expansive musical world they started two decades ago. Blending cinematic prog, rock&pop, fusion textures, synth-driven atmospheres, and rich storytelling, ”Sunya” delivers an immersive listening experience for longtime fans and new listeners alike.
Setting the stage with “The Wasteland,” the band showcase their new interesting musical facet, peppered with squiggling synths and dramatic strings, it’s a sweeping sound dominated by its cinematic scope and narrative impact. The Mad Max-channeling “Marauders” launches the album into invigorated territory, an uptempo rocker that rides melodic backing samples, Talkbox robotics, and sci-fi production effects before sliding into the elastic-bass jamfest of the neon-lit underworld marketplace of “The Bazaareteria.”
The album’s centerpiece is the three-part sprawl of “The Glass Desert.” Here, the lyrics shine in gorgeous poetry that adds character and an additional setting to the world, while also allowing the band — drummer Nick Crescenzo, guitarists Rob Parr and Max Tousseau, bassist Nick Sollecito, and percussionist Aiden Earley — to really let loose.
It’s a journey spanning from the proggy bounce of “Giants” — which packs in more riffs, wiggling funk bass, vocal effects, and some tempo switch-ups — to “Cliffs and Stormlands,” which builds slowly from the restrained, dream-like “Cliffs”‘ portion to a climactic “Stormlands” that’s one of the funkiest segments on the album. The harmonica (courtesy of Ross Garren) is the secret star here, sounding like Stevie Wonder was dropped into the wild, wild West.
Part III, “The Plains,” closes out the mini-epic with bluesy licks, horn heft, and an extended coda that soars into the horizon. This nearly 20-minute escape is a stunner that would be quite an experience in a live setting. Finally, truth and light are (maybe?) found in ”Sunya” in the title track, which closes this part of the saga with a tease, a promise, and a sax solo.
Seeking truth in the hostile world beyond the walls, ”Sunya” is liberation, both for the character in this story and, in a sense, the previous sonic boundaries of The Dear Hunter. With fresh sonic tricks and stories to tell, the band continues down another ambitious, enthralling, and limit-pushing progressive path.
