Stranger In My Own Town” is the second album from DANIEL GAZZOLI PROJECT. This Italian guitarist / songwriter is a true fan of late ’80s Melodic Hard Rock, declaring as main influences the likes of Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, House Of Lords, etc. We were already pleased by the DANIEL GAZZOLI PROJECT debut LP, but that happened 2016.
How the DANIEL GAZZOLI PROJECT sounds a decade after? Well, “Stranger In My Own Town” is much better, complete than the project’s debut LP, musically with the same feeling: Melodic Hard Rock with AOR doses but not only in the ‘commercial’ side of the genre – there’s some interesting elaboration between these compositions.
We find a capable, melodic vocalist in Giacomo Rossi, and apart from Massimiliano Sabbadini on keyboards, Gazzoli play all instruments. Production is detailed, the Daniel Gazzoli Project feels really tight and the songs come flawlessly executed. The whole thing feels like a ‘true band sound’.

The opening intro, “Prelude,” creates the atmosphere and immediately conveys Daniel’s ability to flesh out simple, functional ideas, the right foundation for writing straightforward, catchy songs that don’t claim to reinvent the wheel sonically. ‘The Place Of My Heart’ and the title track display derivative yet decidedly enjoyable songwriting, the kind that makes you want to hum the song from the second chorus. The pursuit of ’80s sounds is also, and above all, felt in the production: the work clearly looks to the past, revealing far more strengths than weaknesses.
On the plus side, it’s definitely missing the compression typical of many modern releases; the sonic chromaticism characteristic of ’80s releases (dreaming of Whitesnake, Def Leppard, and Dokken) is at least partially appreciable when listening to the album with an audio system capable of doing justice to the analog recordings.

‘Stranger In My Own Town’ shows the solid writing which underpins all the tracks, highlighting a far superior sense of melody, something that puts a smile on the face during the airplay of a song like “Higher Than Stars.” With slightly more varied drumming, a fast and catchy track like “April” puts more dynamic on the CD, while the following “On The Run” is catchy from the first listen.
The ballad “Dawn For A Dreamer” is really well done, with Giacomo Rossi proving to be a truly perfect choice for these high-energy melodies capable of transporting us back in time forty years. There are undoubtedly more technical musicians out there than Daniel Gazzoli, but not many possess his ability to capture the essence of this type of music.

The compositional flair and guitar, vocal, and keyboard melodies of ‘Stranger In My Own Town’ immerse us in a blast from the past. The album is pleasantly entertaining until the closing ‘Loud ‘n’ Proud’, the heavier number on the album with a certain 1986 Yngwie Malmsteen sound circa Trilogy, also Madison.
There’s a lot of potential in the Daniel Gazzoli Project, and we will hear more from this talented musician in years to come for sure.
