If we speak about Classic Rock albums, put English rockers SWEET second album “Sweet Fanny Adams” on the list. Considered the ‘first album’ from the ‘new’ SWEET – previously they were a bubblegum pop band – “Sweet Fanny Adams” rocks like Hell!
As requested, here’s the Sony / BMG remastered reissue including awesome bonus tracks.
It’s not easy to find an album without ‘skip-tracks’ – well, reserve your finger to raise your fist while listening to “Sweet Fanny Adams” – all tracks are great in its own right. And that include the bonus tracks on this remastered reissue: 4 non-album tracks, standalone singles (including ‘The Ballroom Blitz’), two with its B-sides, all darn good too!
Check out songs like ‘Set Me Free’ and ‘Sweet F.A.’ – you can hear influences of early ’70s DEEP PURPLE. Simply one of the best Rock albums ever. No weak songs, only great hits. Pure style.
“Sweet Fanny Adams” is generally regarded among SWEET cognoscenti as the first “Real” album. Even the title reveals their freedom to express themselves both as individuals and musicians – they naturally would have used the title “Sweet FA” or worse but RCA made pressure. (for non-English born: “Sweet FA” – or ”Sweet Fanny Adams” – is a British slang term meaning “absolutely nothing at all”. It is frequently used as a euphemism for the dirtier phrase “sweet fuck all”. It indicates that someone has done, known, or received nothing, often with a nuance of laziness or incompetence).
In the grand scheme of things, this is the band at its finest – full of energy, humor and social statement of the era. When compared to other albums one thing becomes apparent: no singles! Unheard of today but the idea of a concept / hear a full album was more acceptable back then.
Guitarist Andy Scott recalls; ”Listening to “Sweet FA”, “Set Me Free”, “Heartbreak Today”, “No You Don’t”,” “AC-DC” and the all the rest took me straight back to 1973-74 with all the Glitz and Blitz. I was amazed how integrated the songs were, mainly Sweet compositions, with a production to rival the best in rock. The song “Set Me Free” has also had many covers, Saxon and Vince Neil among them.”
“Sweet Fanny Adams” was a milestone, groundbreaking, fully deserving of the chart success around the world and critical acclaim.
“Sweet FA – Never gonna make it / Sweet FA – People think we fake it / Sweet FA – Now we’re gonna take it!” … that’s an anthem folks!
