As requested, here’s the now very rare Japanese edition of SEVEN WISHES second album “Utopia” including an exclusive bonus track. Originally released 2001, there was an European Limited Edition including an exclusive bonus track as well, included here as 0dayrox extra.
Sweden’s SEVEN WISHES was a terrific combo from Karlskoga, Örebro, oftem known as the ‘Swedish DOKKEN’, and that’s pretty accurate thanks to Anthony Cedergren’s guitar playing being very Lynch-esque (especially the rhythm) and the overall sound, we would add some FAIR WARNING, FATE, FIFTH ANGEL crunch, and why not, DANGER DANGER on the more melodic tracks.
There’s a very classy melodic hard rock singer in Pelle Andersson, with that unmistakable Scandinavian feeling, and the songs are catchy, upbeat rocking – not a weak tune all over the track list.
While SEVEN WISHES sound is undeniably European, their songwriting style & structure are, as said, very DOKKEN-esque. They even do a cover of ‘Unchain The Night’ here!
“Utopia” is melodic hard rock but on the heavier side of things, riff-driven. The vocals are an octave higher than Don Dokken’s, but this will still appeal to fans of the old DOKKEN sound. The opening three tracks are all rockers and are the best example of the band’s songwriting prowess and style.
First number ‘Out Of Sight’ is a highlight, rocking and head bangin’. ‘Don’t Fade Away’ and ‘Face That Evil’ are two of the heavier album tracks, while ‘Justify’ is the only real ballad (still rocking) of the album. A good one at that too. But for the most part, the songs rock hard and their are plenty of old school George Lynch guitar licks.
There is a straight up cover of DOKKEN’s ‘Unchain The Night’ included, which should reinforce the description of their style for you. Just convert that to the European sound and production style.
“Utopia” is an album that build a reputation over the years as a rocking-hard metallic platter in classic 80s style: sharp yet melodic. Solid songwriting is the backbone of any timeless song, as it provides the core “bones” that transcend genres, arrangements, and fleeting trends. That’s what you’ll find on SEVEN WISHES’ ”Utopia”.
