One of the essential MOLLY HATCHET albums is 1980’s ”Beatin’ The Odds”, perhaps their most catchy and southern’ rockin’ melodic. This Rock Candy Records remastered & reloaded reissue includes 4 bonus tracks. This disc has become pretty hard to find, even it isn’t featured at Rock Candy’s website anymore.
”Beatin’ The Odds” was MOLLY HATCHET’s first album with new vocalist Jimmy Farrar (original vocalist Danny Joe Brown would be back within a year). Again produced by magician Tom Werman, ”Beatin’ The Odds” is one of the best MOLLY HATCHET albums: rockin’, kickin’ n’ hot.
As usual, the sound quality is excellent sound-shaped from 24-bit digital technology by Jon Astley, including 16 page full color booklet featuring original and enhanced artwork.

During the Seventies and Eighties, Southern Rock was at the peak of its popularity. Evolving out of traditional country music, blues and up-tempo rock ‘n’ roll, groups such as The Allman Brother’s Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band led the charge, waving their confederate flags high and proud.
Molly Hatchet, from Jacksonville, Florida, were one of the biggest and best of the ‘new wave’ of Southern rock bands. Their self titled debut album was issued in 1978 and confounded the critics by selling over a million copies, making them one of the most popular live attractions in the U.S.
As if to prove that it wasn’t a fluke, their follow-up album, ‘Flirtin’ With Disaster’, continued the success, going double platinum and earning a top 20 place in the album charts.

So, when original lead vocalist Danny Joe Brown opted to leave the band in 1980 and pursue a solo career, many thought that Hatchet’s days would be numbered.
Amazingly nothing could’ve been further from the truth. With the appointment of new frontman Jimmy Farrar they crafted a classic slice of southern fried rock, the prophetically titled, ‘Beatin’ The Odds’, yet another platinum success story.

Like its predecessors, ‘Beatin’ The Odds’ is a masterpiece of loud n’ proud Southern rock, with guitars a-blazin’ and all guns a-firin’. New boy Jimmy Farrar fitted the role like he was born for the job, whilst the triple lead guitar attack of Duane Roland, Steve Holland and Dave Hlubek even gave Skynyrd a run for their money.
Unquestionably a southern rock classic.
