Bringing to life ‘Classic Albums Available Again on CD‘ as read on the sticker, specialized Dutch label Music On CD has been doing a great job reissuing long out of print albums. Such is the case with FASTER PUSSYCAT 1989’s “Wake Me When It’s Over“.
While not exactly a ‘classic’, “Wake Me When It’s Over” is Faster Pussycat’s second album showcasing a more mature, solid songwriting, moving from the sleazy metal sound of their debut to a more bluesy hard rock sound.
There are plenty of great songs here, and if you’re not into the band’s early sleazy rock style, you might want to think twice with “Wake Me When It’s Over”. From the very first notes, it’s clear that the guitar work is far more refined and elaborate than on the dirtier debut LP ‘Faster Pussycat’, and that’s a major strength of this sophomore album.
The riffing and scales are better and the solos more sophisticated, remaining poser and catchy, and they make the whole rolling feeling more intense for sure. The rhythm section is always there doing what it has to in the most ideal way, keeping the groove and the uplifting sense alive.
There’s a polished ‘1989 sound’ on “Wake Me When It’s Over” yet keeping FP rebellion. The band clearly stepped up musically and this is a much fuller, ballsier sounding album than debut.

And there are some damn cool songs, like the hard rockin’ bombs ‘Where There’s A Whip There’s A Way’, the groovy ‘Little Dove’, I like the sass of ‘Gonna Walk’, and the sleazy rock n roll attitude of ‘Tattoo’ and ‘Poison Ivy’.

Hit single ‘House Of Pain’ is an incredible ballad, worth the purchase of this album alone. It can rival any ‘cowboy power ballad’ that Poison, Bon Jovi or Cinderella carried in their saddlebags.
And there’s another highlight in the anthem, arena-ready ‘Slip Of The Tongue’, a killer kick @ss hard rocker where the best Motley Crue influence appears.

The album was quite successful, peaked at No. 48 in the Billboard 100 albums chart, with two singles in “Poison Ivy” and “House of Pain” which video – directed by future film director Michael Bay – was in heavy rotation on MTV.
However, “Wake Me When It’s Over” remains unheard by many hard rock fans. And that’s a shame, because this is a really strong record.

“Wake Me When It’s Over” never has been remastered, nor this reissue, but the new digital transfer technique – which augment the signal / Dynamic Range without distortion – makes wonders here. The album comes full out of the speakers, much more defined than the original CD press.
