STEELWINGS – Back (2019)
Titled “Back”, this is new new album from Scandinavian veteran rockers STEELWINGS, to be released tomorrow. Steelwings hail from Sweden and play classic hard rock / metal with a sound and style with a strong ’80s foundation.
Formed in 1982 they were part of the FWOSHM (First Wave Of Swedish Heavy Metal) being very active throughout the decade and at the beginning of the ’90s. The band played a lot of gigs during this time and much of their material was recorded and released in different forms.
In 1983 the band went to England and recorded two songs for Ebony Records and the song Live Your Life is featured on the label’s Metal Plated compilation album. Today these recordings, and other past material, are available to hear on Spotify.
They also appeared on the charity record Swedish Metal Aid, together with other heavy rockbands such as Europe, Treat and Heavy Load. In 1989, the band’s last album before their hiatus, Steelwings, was released both as LP and CD on the Air Music Scandinavia label.
In 2007, the local city of Markaryd celebrated it’s 700th year and the band was asked too play some songs at this event. The guys got together again and this was the beginning of a new era for Steelwings. Although some years passed, eventually they started to work on a more regular basis.
New songs were written and the group started playing regular live shows, amongst others, in 2015 at the Muskelrock Festival in Sweden. The wish to release a new record grew stronger and the search for a record deal began.
This materialized last year and result is “Back”.
Steelwing plays old-shool hard rock with a late Seventies / first half of the ’80s feeling.
‘I’m Lonely Man’, ‘Walk On Water’, or ‘Walk In The Sky’ bring to my mind Rainbow Dio-era minus the neo-classical and more of its Long Live Rock N Roll style, while tracks such as ‘Nightmare’, ‘Rock The Nation’ and the riff-driven ‘All Night’, Krokus.
There’s a bit or early Eighties Judas Priest as well on ‘Death Or Gold’.
You can hear Steelwings’ years on the road on “Back”, seasoned musicians who ‘lived the scene’ in the ’80s, and their traditional hard rock / old school metal music is really entertaining. The album is very well executed and produced with an analog atmosphere.
