VESPERS NINE – True Story (2014)
*
Based in South Florida, VESPERS NINE launched in late 2012 formed by seasoned musicians from the local area, and after some singles and gigs (Jack Russell’s Great White opened their last show) the quintet are presenting their debut CD “True Story“, produced by renowned Hal Batt.
Vespers Nine’s sound has elements of American melodic hard rock, with some resemblance to ’90s Night Ranger, Tyketto, Foreigner and Neal Schon’s ‘modern’ version of Journey.
So “True Story” offers radio-friendly tunes with hooky guitar riffs and melodies catchy enough to warrant repeated listens. Their music is accessible, generally positive in mostly up-tempo structures. Depending on your perspective there is a spiritual element to their songs.
Lead vocalist John F. Simon has a good voice with a decent range and is a good choice for Vespers Nine’s classic melodic approrach. The rhythm section is tight, especially the drums providing a solid foundation.
One of the best cuts is the album opening “Mystery”, a fine up-tempo melodic rocker with catchy vocal harmonies and sharp guitar riffs.
The band slow it down a little on the mid-tempo ballad “Forever Yours”, the uplifting “Walk With Me” and on the commercial “Waiting For You” featuring glistening background harmonies.
All the songs are originals except for a cover of Mr. Mister’s classic hit “Broken Wings” nicely arranged with acoustic guitars blended with clean electrics. The vocal crystal clear arrangement is cool too, as Simon duets with female bass player Gricel Julie Dosal. The guitar solo is very Journey-esque.
If you like your radio friendly American Melodic Rock done in the early ’90s vein, Vespers Nine’s “True Story” is for you.
