While relegated to a second row in terms of popularity, PRECIOUS METAL was one of the best all-women hard rock bands from the second half of the ’80s – they actually can play, and very, very well. Their albums have become quite hard to find, and one of you asked where to find CD copies of these. Seems vocalist / songwriter Leslie Knauer (who still fronts the band, the only remaining member) some time ago made available via her website remastered versions of Precious Metal first 3 albums.
Here’s in exclusive the remaster of third self-titled effort “Precious Metal”, a pretty killer slice of glossy melodic hard rock along the same lines as Vixen, Lita Ford, and Heart.

Indeed, the Heart sound from their albums ‘Bad Animals’ and ‘Brigade’ it’s a proper comparison to the music on offer here on “Precious Metal”, originally issued 1990. Even Ann & Nancy Wilson co-wrote and play on the song ‘Trouble’, a pumping midtempo AORish number, and one of the highlights.
The album also boasts a guest appearance from Cherie Currie (The Runaways) on vocals.

“Precious Metal” (the album) is exactly what you’d expect from a melodic hard rock band in 1990 – full of guitar hooks, catchy melodies, keyboard fills, rock anthems and power ballads, all wrapped by a pristine huge production.

The album’s songwriting is strong as heard on the punchy ‘Thrilling Life’, the groovy ‘Easier Than You Think’, the hairy metallic ‘Nasty Habits’ or the luxury power ballad ‘Forever Tonight’ that seems taken from Vixen’s second album.
We find as well a couple of fine cover tunes – a somewhat rockin’ version of the Jean Knight oldie ‘Mr. Big Stuff’, and a very cool take on Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Two Hearts’, done glammy hard rock.

There’s no info about this remastering job on “Precious Metal”, but I assure you it sounds million times better than the original CD press. Try Knauer’s site for a copy (not listed anymore) but you never know…
If you’re a fan of classic late 80s melodic hard rock, especially female-fronted acts, you’ll definitely want to check out “Precious Metal”.
