SPACECREAM – Pterodactyl Sky (2016)
“Pterodactyl Sky” is the debut album by SPACECREAM, the quite original four piece glam / glitter / rock outfit from Hollywood (where else?) fronted by the fulsome Savannah Pope.
While Pope is dolled up like a Rocky Horror Show or sci-fi B-movie extra, the band conform to the standard rock attire but Pope is so visually imposing the initial impression of Space Cream is of a zany bunch, with Pope giving Lady Gaga a run for her money (in a budget sort of a way).
Additionally, Pope’s song titles are equally ‘off the wall’, including numbers such as ‘Nefarious Lothario’, ‘Pterodactyl Sky’, and ‘Leave Dracula Alone’.
So are they ‘for real’? Or just looking to create a buzz through being outrageous?
After listening to their 8-track debut I can say yes: this is refreshing glittering stuff with a rocking edge and some crazy, original ideas.
Savannah Pope may look too much extravagant or ridiculous for some, but one thing for sure is that she has a fantastic voice. And the band Dizzy Joan (guitar), Saul Slotnick (bass) and Zak Ryan (drums) provide the perfect backdrop to demonstrate her chops.
And musically? There’s no flashy production, no pyrotechnics, no frills, just a very tight (but suitably ‘loose’) rock band.
I was reminded in their simplicity, but effectiveness, of the early Alice Cooper band in this case fronted by Ann Wilson & Fee Waybill’s bastard love child who inherited her mother’s voice and father’s dress sense.
There’s also many references to early Heart, Pat Benatar and even early Queen, all mixed with a Rocky Horror Show touch.
Weird? Not at all, all sounds pretty classic rock.
As example you have a heavenly arrangement and celestial choir onthe title track, then there’s the spine-tingling guitar and slow-burn build of ‘Feel The Light’; the positively sticky and otherworldly intercourse of ‘SpaceCream’, or the electric sparkling funk of lead track ‘Killer’. This is a shiver-inducing collection in the very best sense of the word.
So are ‘SpaceCream’ for real? Yes they are. “Pterodactyl Sky” features some of the best female vocals I’ve heard in a good while, at least, one of the most original.
If there is a hole in your soul that can only be filled with a large helping of highly imaginative, theatrical, cerebral, glitter-fueled, prog-tinged, sexually charged rock n’ roll, then you may not know it yet but SpaceCream are your new favorite band.
