FROM THE DEPTH – Moments (2020)
After years of hard times they are now fully operational with a stable lineup, and with the new partnership with Rockshots Records, Italians FROM THE DEPTH are ready to show fans what they have been working on with their full length debut “Moments“.
Starting as a power metal cover band with a distinct “melodic mindset”, From The Depth has come a long way since 2008, and the maturity and refinement really show in this new chapter: “Moments” is a punchy yet extremely polished collection of melodic metal tunes spiced with progressive, sympho and power metal touches but always catchy, mixing driving guitars with splashes of keyboards and soaring vocals.
We get fire right in from the start with ‘Immortal’ and the first minute alone captures the heart of this band and displays a lot of their musical prowess. The levels are very well balanced and the mix is pretty solid throughout as well, so no components are lost.
The guitar work from Alessandro Cattani is very respectable in many ways. The riffs are strong and the leadwork can be excellent at times. There are also plenty of clean moments that the band implements throughout passages during many songs throughout the album.
The instrumental on track five, ‘Hypnos’, brings a more darker feel which brings the album down a few pegs in terms of velocity and this carries on a bit through the next couple of tracks.
It’s an atmospheric switch that changes the dynamics of the album at the halfway point, much more melodic and even with a certain hard rock feel. However, there’s plenty of tempo at points. ‘Missed’ is very upbeat and has a great duel section between guitarist Alessandro Cattani and keyboardist Andrea De Paoli.
And a didn’t mentioned Raffaele “Raffo” Albanese yet; his impressive, clean huge vocals are the other factor of this band quality. An infusion of carny-like melodies and old-school metal with ‘A Matter of Time’, and an epic ballad as the closer with ‘Somewhere’.
There are so many compliments that I could make towards how professionally the album is done in terms of production and musicality. Each component whilst being very individualistic is mixed excellently and potently so that “Moments” really has defined character that is symbiotic to each member’s input. Excellent vocals, excellent guitar work, excellent drums and some excellent keyboards (a lot) to boot.
From The Depth are much more than just another ‘melodic power metal’ band. It’s tasty, clever, catchy, interesting and so very detailed in arrangements a over all that; very melodic.
