SOUNDGARDEN – Superunknown [20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Remastered] (2014)
This year, the reunited SOUNDGARDEN celebrate the 20th Anniversary of their groundbreaking album “Superunknown” with a special reissue in two Deluxe Versions available via A&M Records/UMe.
The Deluxe Edition is a 2-CD package featuring the remastered album along with disc two consisting of demos, rehearsals, B-sides and more.
The Super Deluxe Edition is a 5-CD package featuring the remastered album, additional demos, rehearsals and B-sides and the fifth disc is the album mixed in Blu-ray Audio 5.1 Surround Sound. A 2-LP gatefold of the original 16 vinyl tracks remastered on 200-gram vinyl in a gatefold jacket will also be made available.
For many, “Superunknown” is one of the most faithful representations of the crappy grunge wave. I disagree.
If something, Soundgarden was the only band from that ‘dark ages for melody’ era able to rescue some of the true, traditional hard rock essence.
Sure, there’s some ‘alternative’ in it, but also groovy hard rock riffs, metal patterns (to my ears, inspired by Black Sabbath), a bit of psychedelia and even commercial pop on the smash hit “Black Hole Sun”.
This “Superunknown Deluxe Version” is really good as the remaster has fixed some mud and everything comes out more bright.
The bonus CD is also a worthy addition as shows how many of the best tracks were evolving from its primal stages, and you have rare B-sides and previously unreleased demos.
A solid album then, even better now.
