OSSSY – Serum I (2012)

We have been pleasantly surprised few days ago by the second effort from OSSSY, Serum 2.0, posted HERE.
As the first release by this German outfit was recorded at the same time of Serum 2.0 (same recording sessions split into two separate CD), and judging its quality, I was eager to get the part 1 as soon as possible.
Well, here it is, and as you would suspect it was entitled “Serum 1.0”.
Established in Hannover, Germany, Oswald OSSSY Pfeiffer is a multi-instrumentalist and record producer who in the last 20 years has collaborated with artists such as Paul Young, UFO, Gunter Gabriel, Accept, TOTO, Fury In The Slaughterhouse, and uncredited for many others as session musician and composer.
Now, Osssy decided it was time for his own band and cut his own stuff, pulling together some very good musician friends collected during all these years.
We have the underrated yet talented English axe-man Steve Mann (Lionheart, The Sweet, MSG) spreading some truly great guitar solos, Glenn Hughes Band guitarist JJ Marsh, Toto’s Simon Phillips behind the skins, and bass player Lars Lehmann (Uli Jon Roth) among many others.
If you liked Osssy’s second album already presented here, you can’t go wrong with this previous release “Serum 1.0”.
This is carefully crafted Melodic Rock inspired by British, US and Scandinavian stylings with a strong AOR feeling on many cuts. Osssy owns a quite varied set of vocal inflections, and the arrangements / musicianship have nothing to envy from the ‘big’ names of the genre.
As on the second record, another remarkable aspect of “Serum 1.0” is the strong songwriting. All Osssy originals show his influences but all it’s done with a very personal touch and a warm, instantly enjoyable production sound handled by himself.
