STAR CHASE – The New Day (2016)
STAR CHASE is the new band formed by very familiar names from the Australian Melodic Rock scene; Jason ‘Jase’ Old from The Radio Sun (and previously Safire, Square one, Someone Elses Life) and ex-Safire guitarist Steve Martret.
Their debut CD “The New Day” is out now via MelodicRock Records, a disc plenty of melodic AOR tunes in the classic style of the genre.
After the 15th anniversary of the original Safire EP – a loved, wonderful piece of work much sought after by collectors – Steve and Jase began writing new songs together initially for fun. This eventually led to having over 20 songs finished in a few months.
They called former bandmates Gilbert Annese (drums, Square One, Someone Elses Life), keyboardist Aaron Suter (Safire) and bass player Anthony Wong (Someone Elses Life), and after some time of rehearsal it was clear there was a chemistry so the next step was to record an album.
The result is “The New Day”, collection of 11 rocking tunes for fans of melodic sweet guitar riffs, keyboard filled tunes and lots of harmony vocals.
Star Chase’s sound is typically Aussie, with some waves of Scandinavian Melodic Rock especially on the choruses.
“Wings Of Tomorrow”, the super melodic “New Day”, the Bon Jovi-esque “Broken Heart”, the breezy “Starting All Over”, and the heavenly harmonized “Memories Live Again” (a highlight) are among the most solid melodic rockers here.
The mid-tempo poppy AOR of “I Want You” is rich in layers of vocal harmonies in a Swedish vein, then the catchy choruses on “Say You Love Me” brings to mind the Safire days.
The sweet melodies of “One Reason” recall Jase’s work on The Radio Sun, while the band delivers a nice ballad with “I Won’t Wait”, adorned with cool string/synth orchestrations.
“The New Day” is a very enjoyable Melodic Rock debut by Star Chase, following the classy sounds of the genre with an unequivocal Aussie sound, mixed with the New Wave of Scandinavian Melodic Hard Rock.
Sweet melodies and catchy choruses are the core of these melodious songs, very well played and executed. Production is open, with a ‘separated’ mix to appreciate each instrument clearly.
