“Spacewalk : A Salute To Ace Frehley” is not technically a new release, what it is, though, is a tribute to Space Ace that has long been out of print, which was originally appeared in 1996.
But this baby had to be reissued as there are some killer remakes here featuring some talented cats like Marty Friedman, Gilby Clarke, Jeff Watson (Night Ranger), John Norum, Sebastian Bach & Snake Sabo (Skid Row) and many more.
The best versions for me on the album include opener “Deuce” with Marty Friedman delivering an incendiary work, the cool “Shock Me” by ex Guns N’ Roses Gilby Clarke, “Parasite” by Tracii Gunns, and a very crazy, different rendition of “New York Groove” by Bruce Bouillet.
But the best of all is “Rock Bottom” with the great performance by Sebastian Bach (a confessed Kiss fanatic).
Europe’s John Norum does also a quite good take in “Cold Gin”, much more rocking and guitar driven than the original.
This nearly twenty year collection of covers also features that late great Dimebag Darrell on the last track “Fractured Mirror”. While the song is not one of the best of the bunch, it is still pretty bad-ass to hear.
Overall, “Spacewalk : A Salute To Ace Frehley” is a successful tribute properly reissued by Deadline / Cleopatra Records.
It is a must have for Kiss fans and anyone influenced by the style and personna of Ace Frehley, and a nice listen for general classic hard rock fans.
