RESURRECTION KINGS – Resurrection Kings [Japan Edition] (2016)
As already anticipated here on the blog with two advanced singles, RESURRECTION KINGS self-titled debut is, simply put, one of the ‘Albums Of Year’.
Former Dio and Giuffria guitarist Craig Goldy has put together a fantastic band that is top notch; Chris West (Lynch Mob) on lead vocals, Sean McNabb (Lynch Mob, Dokken, Quiet Riot) on bass, and the great Vinny Appice (Dio, Black Sabbath) on drums.
This album will rock til you drop you from the opening track “Distant Prayer” to the final notes of the closing blistering rocker “What You Take”. All Killers, No Fillers.
Fans of classic era Whitesnake, Dio, ’80s Black Sabbath, Dio fronted Rainbow etc, need to own “Resurrection Kings” immediately.
What is perhaps most remarkable about this album is the fire in Goldy’s guitar work: this is the first original material he has produced in something like 20-plus years, and the anxiety and hunger is evident in every single note.
His riffs cascade and tumble with freshness and vibrancy, while his solos are energetic, enervating and almost elegiac in places. There is not a moment on all the tracks here where his contribution is anything less than flawless.
But, of course, it’s not all about the guitarist (although, for many he will be the centre of attention). This is a true tight band, and much of the focus in this regard is inevitably going to fall on Chas West’s vocals: and rightly so, as he is a truly noteworthy talent.
His voice is rich and angry, with a deep roar that its possessor knows how to contain before letting it bubble, enticingly, to the surface without letting fully rip. Through every lyric of every song you have the feeling that he is more than capable of delivering so much more, but is deliberately holding affairs in abeyance – and his performance is so much more effective for this forbearing restraint, as it adds to the dramatic effect of the material.
Regarding the rhythm section, there’s a smashing drum performance by Vinny Appice, and Sean McNabb provide a pumping bass guitar sound.
Released by Frontiers Music and Avalon / Marquee in Japan (featuring a great acoustic version of “Never Say Goodbye”) “Resurrection Kings” is definitely the first MUST HAVE Classic Hard Rock album of 2016.
Get your air guitars out and crank your stereo to 11 as you listen, and bang your head to this terrific CD / band.
