KID ROCK announced today that he will release his new album, “Sweet Southern Sugar“, on November 3, followed by a national tour all over America. This is Kid Rock’s first album recorded in Nashville, ranging from Americana to country to classic rock, with a little rap sprinkled in between and highlights Rock’s armory of talent, which transcends a single genre.

Kid Rock exploded into the scene twenty five years ago with his mix of rap / metal which I personally enjoyed. Since then he has been musically scattered and I lost interest in his work.
However, “Sweet Southern Sugar” is different. Despite its title, there’s very few Southern rock bits in this album, but a lot of classic rock.

Opening track, ‘Greatest Show On Earth’, shows Kid Rock returning in full form, a song driven by a kick ass riff and a punchy attack.
There’s classic rock / pop catchiness in ‘Po-Dunk’, and an almost The Eagles feel in ‘Tennessee Mountain Top’. I like this Kid Rock 2017.
‘I Wonder’ adds modernity with some electronics, but the rhythm, the keyboards and guitars are pure classic rock akin ZZ Top.

‘American Rock ‘n Roll’ is a terrific classic rocker in a midtempo fashion similar to Cinderella’s songs of this ilk, ‘Back To The Otherside’ add acoustics to its classy arrangements, while ‘Raining Whiskey’ goes for Americana, but very well done.

‘Stand The Pain’ is another highlight for me; a melodic rocker, yeah folks, complete with pumping bass lines, vibrant guitars and very melodic vocals by Kid Rock.
The only hint of the old rapper Kid appears in ‘Grandpa’s Jam’, but even here the rockin’ spirit is present.

If you have lost Kid Rock’s trace for many years now (like me) you better check his new album “Sweet Southern Sugar”. It’s a darn good slice of American Classic Rock, plenty of guitars, real drums and organic vocals. All song are written / based in a classic rock format, no rap / country stuff here.
The result for me is like mix of ZZ Top, some David Lee Roth solo stuff, some The Eagles and Ron Keel’s Fair Game.
And I like what I hear. A lot.
