No doubt about it; RIOT is one of the most influential American hard rock / metal acts which set the table for the ’80s sound of the genre in the US. Just released by very good German label High Roller Records, “Archives Volume 3 ; 1987-1988” covers the most mainstream era of the band featuring unreleased material, alternate mixes and demos – all fully remastered.
We already featured at 0dayrox “Archives Volume 1 & 2”, all plenty of interesting and enjoyable rarities, and now this “Archives Volume 3 ; 1987-1988” adds more collectors material to dissect.

In “Archives Volume 3 ; 1987-1988” we have a rich in quality and quantity list of rare recordings and rough mixes of classic tracks and hard to find songs that are not featured in a full length album of the New Yorkers.
“Thundersteel”, “Fight Or Fall”, “Sign Of The Crimson Storm” are standing out, and the introduction of “Buried Alive”, as well as “Flight Of The Warrior”, “Johnny’s Back” (for their favorite mascot Johnny the Seal) and the rare instrumental (in a rough mix version) of “Run for Your Life”.

While the compilation refers to the two years 1987 – 1988, there are tracks that ended up in Privilege Of Power (Riot’s studio album from 1990) in demo format: “On Your Knees”, “Metal Soldiers”, and “Killer”, the latter also recorded by Riot with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals though not featured here – and I hope it will be released in a future ‘Archives’ release.

“Exciter”, “When Lights Go Down”, “A Place Called Tomorrow” and “Liar” are previously unreleased, songs not to be found on any Riot studio album. All good and strong recordings.
All vocals on the entire album are performed by Tony Moore giving power to every lyric with his epic voice, the one and only Mark Reale on guitars, Don Van Stavern on bass, and Bobby Jarzombek on drums, with Mark Edwards appearing on drums as well on a couple of tracks.
Classic US ’80s metal / hard rock to collect and enjoy.
Highly Recommended
