MOTHER’S FINEST – Another Mother Further [Music On CD ‎reissue]

Some of you fellow readers requested MOTHER’S FINEST cult classic albums in a remastered form, and while the band’s third effort ‘Another Mother Further’ never received a remaster, this recent reissue by the reputed Music On CD European label sounds million bucks.

Pioneers of the funk metal that would become quite successful a decade later, gender-integrated Mother’s Finest mixed into their musical style elements from hard rock, heavy funk and rhythm & blues like few.
For their funnily titled third album (second with major label CBS) “Another Mother Further” the band’s delivery was aimed to more commercial sounds, and for that matter they used talented Tom Werman (Twisted Sister, Stryper, Cheap Trick) to produce.

The band gets carried away making its “who says a funk band can’t play rock?” point: grafting Led Zeppelin’s ‘Custard Pie’ riff onto the Miracles’ cover “Mickey’s Monkey” is a forerunner of the 2000s mash-ups, while the properly titled “Piece Of The Rock”, performed by male siger Glenn Murdock, indeed rocks.

A track titled “Hard Rock Lover” speaks for itself, then the excellent: “Baby Love” (definitely not the Supremes song) is a wonderful, thrilling shot of hard funk, with female singer (Murdock’s wife) Joyce ‘Baby Jean’ Kennedy wringing every ounce of emotion out of the lyric, and topped off with a fat Moog solo.
“Truth’ll Set You Free” is similar and maybe better, plenty of groove. There’s also lighter fare (the ballad “Thank You For The Love”), and “Dis Go Dis Way, Dis Go Dat Way” is a pleasant blend of R&B and rock tropes.

If you like hard hitting rock ‘n roll full of groove and great musicianship and have not heard this group, then you need to discover Mother’s Finest. ‘Another Mother Further’ is one of their best, believe me.
This Music On CD reissue is excellent, not remastered, but the new digital transfer technique – which augment the signal / Dynamic Range without distortion – makes wonders here.
A really welcomed reissue that well worth the purchase, especially with the album out of print in the USA since many years.
