DEGREED – Lost Generation (2019)

Swedes DEGREED are back with their new album “Lost Generation”, and upon first listen let me tell you these guys aren’t part of a ‘lost generation’; mixing a unique blend of melodies, riffs, keyboards galore, distinctive vocals and very original twists, Degreed are the new blood, innovative combo that the new generation of Melodic Hard Rock needs.

Inspired by classic ’80s melodic rock, this is one a single facet from this Swedish quartet. They are determined to renew the genre and aren’t afraid to spice things with a modern sound, but far behind the production desk.
I mean, “Lost Generation” isn’t just the classic songwriting formula wrapped by a modern production: their songs incorporate other fresh twists, cool arrangements, and all served into catchy package for wider appeal.

Let’s take as example a song here like ‘Summer of Love’; any aficionado to the new wave of Scandinavian melodic rock will dig this sweet melodious tune with its bright verses / chorus and nice keyboards, but I see a, let’s say, Coldplay fan enjoying this as well.
And this apply for the entire disc.

Additionally, Degreed delivers varied tunes, some punchy as the rapid ‘You All Know My Name’, others more in the traditional Melodic Rock mold (the kickin’ title track), or emotional – the pristine ballad ‘Blue Virgin Isles’ brings to mind 1992’s Europe.
And don’t be fooled, while ‘Don’t Let Go’ sounds like a Swedish version of Goo Goo Dolls, this is melodic rock not far from UK’s Vega.

I’m sold with these guys. I know some, more ‘traditional’ melodic rock fans will doubt with some of the material on offer here. Press play again. Dissect these song deeply, and you’ll love ’em.
Even more important, bands like Degreed bring young people to REAL rock music, and they are part of the necessary renewal of the genre.
