DAVID ZAFFIRO – Surrender Absolute [Digitally Remastered 2020] *EXCLUSIVE*
We already featured at 0dayRox the remastered reissues of DAVID ZAFFIRO‘s two first solo albums, now we have here in exclusive “Surrender Absolute“, his third effort from 1992.
According to the time and with the success of Mr. BIG, TESLA, etc, Zaffiro added to “Surrender Absolute” some acoustic guitar mix to the AOR / Melodic Rock style of the 2 previous albums.
Also, and while David still perform some lead vocals, we find here a trained lead singer – the majority of the tracks are fronted by talented Randall Waller, who is better known for his work in AVION and Tunesmith Records, recorded with Mutt Lange.
Zaffiro left Bloodgood shortly after their 1988 release and promptly began a solo career that would deliver up four albums over a six year span. He needed room to express himself and the musical ideas that he had always dreamed of recording.
The result is a lighter AOR / Melodic Rock sound that is sure to appeal fans of the 80s / early 90s.
And “Surrender Absolute” is very 1991-92 in sound & production, opening with “Find My Way”, a piano-based ballad bringing to mind KANSAS melodic side, with the Steve Walsh like vocals of Waller playing no small role in this regard.
Other top Waller cuts include album’s joyous title track, deftly melodic, and “Every Little Thing”, poppy melodic rock focused in taking an acoustic heading in which a fretless bass line holds sway.
Another favorite is “Calling Out To Me” and not just from featuring a duet between Waller and Zaffiro but also due to giving prominence to one of the album’s moments when rhythm guitar reaches for hard rock territory.
All is balanced by three too-hot-to-handle instrumentals cut from the same cloth as Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. “Silas And Serai” comes across laid back and reserved with its slower, feedback driven tempo and bluesy guitar signatures, while “Attitude” impresses as another Satriani style shredder with its elevated form, technical riffs and extensive melody.
“No Long Goodbyes” walks a fine line between the two with its at times atmospheric and others intense soloing focus.
Zaffiro delivers a mature, classy material on “Surrender Absolute”, ranging from melodic rock to AOR / adult contemporary rock wrapped by a very good guitar work a clean production. Kudos to the reissue label for making the album available again in such a highly upgraded form and sound quality.
