India, known for its rich cuisine, diverse culture, and the vibrant Bollywood film industry, is now making waves in the hard rock scene. ABOUT US stands at the forefront of this movement, alongside other notable bands such as Girish & The Chronicles and Fifth Note.
The band will release their sophomore album, ”Take A Piece”, out on April 12 via Frontiers Music. The disc features ten infectious melodic rock rock songs that elevate the band’s signature sound with more guitars and a heavier approach. There’s some of current Journey into their sound, but also modern heavy, and a bit of progressive.
Lead singer Sochan Kikon emerges as a standout vocalist with remarkable versatility and interpretative skills, which seamlessly blends with the band’s technical instrumental prowess. You’ll be surprised by this quality band.
Frontiers markets the band as AOR and hard rock, but there’s things ranging from blues to progressive metal happening as well. What is nice with About Us is that although the song’s structures are someplace in the territory of AOR and melodic hard, the guitar and bass, paired with the energetic drumming, gives them a refreshing youthful sort of energy.
There’s some progressive moments too with a guitar work reminiscent of Dream Theater’s Jhon Pettrucci, and in a couple of tracks, some kind of an Eighties thrash-metal riffage. A strange salad? AOR, hard rock, prog metal, thrash… yeap, but works greatly.
In a genre (or genres?) of same-old, same-old, About Us does enough new tricks to make it really worthwhile. If it suffers from anything, it would be scattered energies from trying to be a variety sample-pack of different things, but arguably that is also the greatest strength.
So no, if you want a pure AOR album or hard rock album or progressive album, this isn’t it. But if you need to hear something different, refreshing, give “Take A Piece” a good listen. If you are a rock and metal-head of a certain age, you are probably into just about every style and sound on this album, to some extent. And we are sure you’ll enjoy every ‘piece’ of this album.
