With influences ranging from Van Halen to Motorhead, Led Zeppelin to Aerosmith, ’80s rockers SEDUCE music emanates an unrelenting energy. Hailing from Detroit, for many headbangers Seduce were ten times better than the likes of Motley Crue or Twisted Sister.
Seduces’ 1985 self-titled first album has become a highly sought after album among the underground metal community and has never seen major worldwide distribution until Rouge Records finally reissued the album remastered in 2018 with distribution through Sony Orchard.
Seduce” (1985) is much heavier than their second album ‘Too Much Aint Enough’ (1988) where the band adopted a melodic hard rock sound of the time. “Seduce” is raw, in your face, and perhaps represents the term ‘glam metal’ like few other. There’s 70s ‘glam’ influences with a sleazy punch, and there’s ‘metal’ too as the guitar riffage is ballsy.
In addition to touring the Northeast in the 1980’s, Seduce opened for world-renowned rock and metal acts when they stopped in Detroit, like Accept and Judas Priest. They are also known for their appearance in Penelope Spheeris’ seminal film The Decline and Fall of Western Civilization Part II, and they were the only band not based in Los Angeles to be featured in the documentary.

The band certainly feels young and hungry on this album – tempos are fast, drums are driving, riffs are heavy, and themes are energetic, and full of youthful exhuberance. The song ‘Headbangers’ is a case in point. The band has a more metallic sound than the LA acts they would later come to absorb somewhat in their next offering.
Before prolonged exposure to the sunset strip bands and the like, Seduce seemed determine to slay with what can be described as legitimate full-bore heavy metal – again Sword and Armored Saint spring to mind – even the vocal tone and raucous backup chants in this one remind me of Bush from ’Saint.
There’s plenty of headbangers throughout the offering – not just a handful of songs. ‘Viper’s Bite’ has an aggressive yet glam tinged appeal, sounding somewhat like London or very early ’Crue, with a catchy, melodic, yet ballsy sound.

A very strong, consistent, aggressive and exciting album from these Detroit lads here. With a drive for success, the band wasn’t willing to depart with their balls for the sake of a commercially acceptable album.
This thing has US metal written all over it, and is executed very well. Vocal performances by Mark Andrews aka Johnny Roxx are on form, at times even tough, while some saucy licks and leads pepper this predominantly fast-paced record.
The bonus tracks are recordings captured live a year before this recording, an a example of how heavy they were at the time. The original tapes of “Seduce” were lost, and the source of this reissue is not specified. It could be better, but sound quality is fine, helped by a remastering job.
Seduce still performs routinely in the Detroit area to crowds of devoted, long-time fans who eagerly anticipate each show.
