CRYING STEEL (feat. Tony Mills) – Stay Steel (2018)
Formed in 1982 CRYING STEEL have been plying their trade more or less consistently ever since, albeit with a multitude of line-up changes. “Stay Steel” is the latest release from these Italian rockers available from June 15, 2018, on the ever-reliable Pride & Joy Music label.
On this new album, the southern Europeans managed to go full throttle featuring none but the mighty Tony Mills (ex SHY, ex TNT) on vocals.
Perhaps the best way to describe Crying Steel’s sound is the most simple one. Rooted in the NWoBHM tradition, Crying Steel plays hard n’ heavy rock. To expand that a bit more, Crying Steel takes twin guitar harmony in riffs and leads, combines it with a dynamic rhythm section for gallop, and then wraps it in a hard rock groove.
Then there’s the addition of Mill’s soaring clean vocals, backed up by the band’s harmonies. They want you to bang your head, but also tap your toes.
Think a mix between Praying Mantis and ’80s Riot. In short, good and effective classic rock / metal.
With “Stay Steel”, you get twelve metal rockers over 54 minutes. That’s excellent bang your head for your buck (or Euro; buck sounds better). Catchy and fast Judas Priest-like rockers come with ‘Crank It Up’, ‘Raise Your Hell’, ‘Speed Of Light’, and the razor sharp riffage of ‘Name Of The Father’.
With something like ‘Warriors’ they go midtempo and almost melodic hard, and while ‘Barricades’ is quite heavy, yet still finds time to drop in a catchy refrain. For ‘Born In The Fire’ you get a light start with acoustic guitar over synth orchestration before turning into steady, then rising, classic metal anthem.
Crying Steel are really experienced in crafting some entertaining melodic hard n’ heavy rock. “Stay Steel” had me recalling the genre glory days in the Eighties, both in songwriting (strong) and sound production (clean and good).
It’s all classy stuff very well done, and being sold by AOR Heaven Records, so it gives you an idea of the album’s polished sound.
