EYE 2 EYE – Nowhere Highway (2020) *EXCLUSIVE*
“Nowhere Highway” is the new album from Neo-Prog five-piece EYE 2 EYE, their fifth since formed in 2003. While there’s classic 80s-style prog into their music with some MARILLION on it, the band declare themselves influenced by elaborated Melodic Rock acts from the era as well.
Indeed, at places there’s some bombast to their sound, and the lead vocals are much more tougher than the regular Neo-Prog bands.
“Nowhere Highway” has concept however you can enjoy the songs randomly, ranging from dynamic rockers to atmospheric melodious tunes.
EYE 2 EYE debut album from 2006 was released under the moniker “Eye To Eye”, which had to change because a band with that name already existed in the United States. After a lengthy break, as usual between their releases, this new opus is ready to be presented to the audience, appealing to a wide spectre of music fans.
The concept begins with a main motif called ‘Ghosts’, a story of a a musician who has lost his inspiration and hopes to find it again in the whiskey bottle, developed in the first part of the album sub-titled ‘The Choice’.
With each glass he falls more into a coma, which ultimately leads him to the ‘Nowhere Highway’. He then leads an eternal fight against his demons and you can see how an artist can be inspired by his creativity.
Through the story music alternate from strong rockers to calmer progressive passages, which suit the lyric content. However, as said, listening most the songs standalone, retain its own content.
But the record is more enjoyable as ‘an album’, from start to finish.
One of our favorites is ‘The Hidden Muse’, a calm song with substance and wonderful atmosphere and drama. More creativity appears in ‘Moons Ago’, while second half of the CD, ‘Nowhere Highway’, is always interesting where a lot of variety and bold ideas go hand in hand.
In terms of sound, the band is special. The voice in particular feels different for Neo-Prog, and the guitar set up sound gives EYE 2 EYE a bit of a unique selling point.
So if you like music with a side of prog and certain melodic rock structures, you’ve come to the right place.
