GENE THE WEREWOLF – The Loner (2016)
Released by Frontiers Music, GENE THE WEREWOLF‘s previous album was a truly enjoyable rockin’ record. But Gene is a true rebel deciding to go indie again and the band’s new album “The Loner” is being released by themselves.
Like that preceding album, this new one – their third to date – is a good time hard rock party album. Gene looks the part with his beard, band T-shirt and denims, plus he has a solid, strong vocal perfect for these kickin’ tunes (no ballads allowed on this album!).
Listening to the title track with its classic rock approved riffs, this is feel-good rock music to be played loud, with songs to point around the 3-minute mark.
Whitesnake’s and former Winger guitarist Reb Beach guests on opener ‘The Walking Dead’ which rocks like a good ‘un. Heck they even do the bad spelling / slang that was loved by bands like Twisted Sister on ‘Too Kool For Skool’. Loving the harmonica solo (sounding like a guitar!) midway through this one.
‘If You Want Me’ builds nicely from the big drum beat / hand claps intro through to a big finish, aided by some piano. The keyboards are also back on the closing song ‘The Best I Can’ – a veritable epic for the band as it clocks in over five minutes.
In a perfect world the songs packed in “The Loner” should be blasting on car radios and jukeboxes all over the planet, because Gene The Werewolf play full on ‘good-time party rock’ that is almost defunct these days.
Put Gene the Werewolf on stage at the Whisky A Go-Go on the Sunset Strip or The Troubadour in West Hollywood in the late ’80s, and they’d kill. They are iconoclasts by virtue of their music, rock ‘n’ roll survivors in thrall to the genre’s power and energy.
And they’re damn good at it. Really, really good.
