THE SCREAMING JETS – Chrome (2016)
Once dubbed Australia’s hardest working touring band, THE SCREAMING JETS are back after 8 years with a new studio release, “Chrome“, their seventh studio album. After first listen, it’s safe to say it sits up there with their best.
It was only two years ago that the band celebrated their silver anniversary – a quarter of a century of rock ‘n roll. It is evident that the former Novocastrians haven’t rested on their laurels, they are still working as hard as ever and pumping out some kicking rockin’ tunes.
If you are new to The Screaming Jets, their ’91 debut album spend several weeks in the Aussie top 5 chart, and they are quite popular in UK.
A hard rock band coming from Australia always will have comparisons with AC/DC or Rose Tatoo, however The Screaming Jets are in a different league. If I had to name a similarity from their country that would be The Angels.
But The Screaming Jets, overall, have a sound more related to the British scene.
Additionally, new record “Chrome” add to the straight hard rock riffs a classic rock feel, in the way the vocals are more ‘open’ and the rhythm section, earthy.
The band’s last studio album was released in 2008. The break between albums wasn’t meant to span eight years, but like all musicians worth their salt, The Screaming Jets wanted to make sure that they had the right songs to dedicate to another album.
They started preparing for “Chrome” three years ago and took the time to make sure they had the right team in place to bring their sound to fruition. Recorded under the guise of legendary producer Steve James – who originally worked on the band’s first 2, and more celebrated albums – so it was a bit like getting the old crew back together.
“Chrome” is a very well balanced album plenty of different textures and big fat rock songs, as well as some quiet moments.
Groovy numbers like ‘Automatic Cowboy’, ‘Razor’, the urgent ‘The Grip’ and the excellent ‘Sex and Violence’ (a highlight) are mixed with melodic cuts like midtempo ‘Won’t Stop You’ (adding acoustics) and the almost poppy ‘Scar’, straight hard rockers (‘Smack in the Mouth’) and a slow, bluesy number in ‘No Place No Home’ (another highlight).
Fans of The Screaming Jets will be pleased to know that “Chrome” includes some of the best material in the band’s career, and for newcomers, this is CD is a perfect vehicle to discover this truly good rocking band.
Everything is very polished, melodic, with clean vocals and an organic classic rock feeling, very well recorded & produced.
Quite Recommended.
