THIRD EDGE – T.I.M.E. (2016)
Coming from Reno, Nevada, hard rocking trio THIRD EDGE are releasing their debut “T.I.M.E.” this week. Steve Harala (lead vocals, guitars), Thaddeus John (bass, backing vocals) and Todd Oldridge (drums, percussion) played in different bands through the years, and although the trio have been writing songs in the studio for years, it wasn’t until 2014 that they solidified as THIRD EDGE.
Managed and recorded by themselves, the first thing that impress in “T.I.M.E.” is the crisp production sound. Second, the mature compositions and the integral instrumentation.
While lyrically “T.I.M.E.” – according to the band – is inspired by Rush’s epic album 2112, musically this has nothing in common with Rush.
Or perhaps yes… and that’s THIRD EDGE sounds pretty Canadian at places.
Their blend of hard rock / melodic rock is some kind of mix between Triumph (check ‘Don’t Look Back’, one of my favorite tracks), Von Groove (the catchy ‘At The Heart’) and the more commercial Queensrÿche (‘Tribal Rituals’).
Additionally, their add a pinch of Nineties grooves to their music as in ballad ‘Way Up High’ or ‘Hang ’em High’ with some Alice In Chains on it, but without the somber atmosphere.
For me, THIRD EDGE is at their best when they go for more melodic-hard stylings, such as on the punchy ‘Live Or Let Die’, the intense title track ‘T.I.M.E. (Song Of Anonymous)’, or another favorite of mine, ‘Supernatural’ where they remind me great melodic hard rockers Loud & Clear, something which happens many times on the album because Harala’s vocals sound a bit like Jess Harnell.
“T.I.M.E.” is a really strong debut by THIRD EDGE, as said, with truly mature songwriting & musicianship plus a crisp, bright production which doesn’t feels indie at all.
