VOODOO HILL – Waterfall (Japanese Edition) (2015)
VOODOO HILL, the collaborative effort between Italian guitar master Dario Mollo and legendary singer/bassist Glenn Hughes presented a couple months ago their new album “Waterfall“, one of the best CD of the year.
Released on Frontiers Music, “Waterfall” offers in its Japanese version as bonus track a really good ‘Orchestral Version’ of the title track.
“Waterfall” marks the first Rock release from Glenn since the demise of the short-lived power trio California Breed.
However, for Glenn Hughes this is some kind of return to more melodic fields, as with Mollo nearby with his guitar riffs, the Voodoo Hill sound leans more to guitar-driven classic melodic hard rock.
Yet, if you know anything about Hughes, you can’t take the blues and soul out of his voice. It’s certainly there, as is his strength and range.
Opener ‘All That Remains’ is a tasteful melodic track with the ‘voice of rock’ in all its glory, but second track ‘The Well’ sets a more muscular, bluesy hard rock tone.
Dario delivers a great solo on ‘Rattle Shake Bone’, while ‘Underneath And Down Below’ is atmospheric with an Eastern feeling and Blackmore-esque guitar work.
The title track is a beautiful slow affair which, as it builds to a climax, sees some vintage screams by Glenn, putting his heart and soul into the project. The whole effect reminds me of No Stranger To Love on Black Sabbath’s ‘Seventh Star,’ still one of his finest moments.
‘Karma Go’ delivers some serious groove, while the closing trio of ’White Feather’, ‘Sunflower’ (with another epic guitar solo) and ‘Last Door’ have more of a dry Seventies feel but still melodic and classic.
Voodoo Hill’s “Waterfall” is solid and entertaining guitar-driven, vocal lead, classic old-fashioned hard rock. Strong songs, great riffs / guitar solos, vintage keyboards and Glenn Hughes sounding at his freshest, conforms a truly palatable slice of classic stuff performed with class.
