RICHARD MARX – Beautiful Goodbye (2014)
*
It’s been 6 years since RICHARD MARX released his last album, and the singer-songwriter says getting back into the studio to record his new album, “Beautiful Goodbye“, out July 8, was ‘liberating’.
Occurs that the album is partly inspired by his divorce from actress Cynthia Rhodes after 25 years of marriage, and yes, of course, is plenty of smooth ballads, but also some of of his trademark smooth, emotional Rock&Pop.
On “Beautiful Goodbye” there are a couple of songs that are reminiscent of some of his past work, which is going to be with any artist, but for the most part, the album sounds like anything he has done before.
Richard Marx is cleverly intending to get updated to modern times, co-writing with, among others, Vertical Horizon’s Matt Scannell, David Hodges of Evanescence, and ’80s über-producer Walter Afanasieff.
But that’s not meaning dropping out his AOR / AC style and class.
Yes, Richard Marx sounds more Adult Contemporary than ever on “Beautiful Goodbye”, but his WestCoast, smooth delicate melodies and arrangements are the backbone of this new album.
Just check the breezy “Suddenly”, the great ballad “Turn Off The Night” or the orchestrated “Eyes On Me”, while “Forgot to Remember” spice things with rocking guitars.
Perhaps the ‘new sound’ will not please everyone, anyway, it’s Richard Marx, and you know what to expect from his pen.
Good stuff.
