LENNY KRAVITZ – Raise Vibration (2018)
LENNY KRAVITZ is about to release his new album “Raise Vibration” next Friday. I still love Karavitz’s early albums plenty of rockin’ soul riffs, funky bass lines and classic rock approach. But honestly, his later work based on electronica isn’t my cup of tea.
With “Raise Vibration” Lenny Kravitz is back to his roots, and a clear proof of that, before listening to the album, is the song’s lenght, most above the 5 minute, not exactly ‘with radio in mind’ for sure.
The funky Kravitz’s sauce we know from his lovely debut album Let Love Rule is, fortunately, revisited almost thirty years later in “Raise Vibration” with the same vibe.
Sure, there’s updated modern sounding beats, but this is an album based in true instruments, Lenny play abundant guitar again, and songwriting is based in the funk-rock- rock-soul, R&B of all times.
Kravitz plays most of the instruments himself, with longtime guitarist Craig Ross and keyboardist / orchestrator David Baron being the only collaborators (other than string and horn players).
Best song is by far ‘Johnny Cash’, grief for a dead mother, intertwined in a timelessly beautiful melody, But also the sexy ‘Low’, the midtempo classic rocker ‘Gold Dust’, or the guitar based title track ‘Raise Vibration’ including Hammond B3.
A personal favorite of mine is the heavy-funk of ‘It’s Enough’ a personal favorite recalling Lenny’s first album, with its sneaky swing and sultry as Stevie Wonder in his best days.
And while ‘5 More Days’ Til Summer’ actually takes the same melodic line of ‘My Sweet Lord’ by George Harrison, in Lenny’s hands this is the perfect Summer song indeed.
Lenny Kravitz is back to his roots in “Raise Vibration”, with his classic mix of rock, groove, funk, soul, R&B, and of course, pop.
I in fact, this is mostly a classic rock album with an updated production but that ‘vintage feel’ that made Kravitz a household name in the late ’80s / early ’90s.
